And we are winning this war are we?

The Taliban dont want to talk, because they think they are winning.

Are we winning a winable war, or wasting lives and resources because we're too proud to admit we cant win this thing.

Of course we'll never win this fking war. The Russians couldn't and neither will we. Why we can't learn the lessons of history is beyond me.

Why is it so hard to find the quote at the end of Rambo III?

Our Empire couldn't subdue them; Russia under a communist dictator ran, in the end.

Losing an unwinnable war, the death count will continue, poor equipment, poor leadership and insufficient troop numbers. This is the Basra "strategic withdrawal" on Afghanistan scale.
The Musa Qala "strategic withdrawal" was the first and now the Sangin "strategic reorganisation" is the next. This is a war to far for the UK and probably the US. More Body bags in Wootton Basset for no purpose, it is criminal, a big thanks goes out to Tony B, you w&nker.

I can see this going the same way as Vietnam, they'll just hide away and keep taking potshots at us until someone in charge has the courage to step forward and say, "This can't go on". Can't see it being soon though, these kid's lives are worth much less than political vanity.

It is not an unwinnable war, Afhganistan has been conquered before despite what is commonly said.

Many areas in Afghanistan are improving very rapidly, its just the attacks in Kabul and areas such as Sangin and Helmand that are the big problems. The areas that the Dutch are in are actually pretty peaceful lately and there has not been very much fighting.

The areas along the Pakistani border are the worst as it is being fought as pretty much a proxy war, with radical Jihadists against the great evil of the USA and other western countries. Which is better than the Jihadists turning up in Memphis Tennesse or Budleigh Salterton. If Pakistan stepped up its effort and decided to stop the militants then the war would be over within a year.

This is a pretty good overview of where the trouble is http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?story...

The areas with all the fighting are seeing very little benefit, but in other areas there is much improvement.

If Pakistan stepped up, that is pretty unlikely, considering they have their own issues, low level civil war for one, not to mention their political worries about the growing Indian influence in Afghanistan. The issue is not Afghanistan, the issue is Pakistan.

Terrorists appearing in the UK or USA? Do you mean the UK born citizens trained in Pakistan type terrorists appearing on UK streets or underground train networks perhaps? Not much connection to Afghanistan there. There is no way a resolution to the Afghan conflict is achievable unless you split the country in a northern and southern Afghanistan.

Leave the South to enjoy the comforts of a feudal society and try to build the North, which will be unpalatable to the Pakistanis in any case, and so the war continues and the coffins stack up ever so nicely.

During WWII there were 50,000/day dying at times and that was being won. 4 Dead indicates to you a war is being lost? Interesting.

Very sensible post. People are too quick to take in what the media says. Fighting is in 15-20% of the country and that is all that is spoken of.

A huge plus one, I can't stand the sight of that grinning cheshire cat knowing he took us blindly into conflict, wasting <mainly, goes without saying> lives and tax payers' money.

The only way to win the war is to play by their rules and shoot any fker that moves

Would result in lots and lots of innocent deaths and many many terrorist attacks on the west

Basically we must go for an all out kill everybody war or bugger off as the current half arsed affair ain't working.

Given those who were killed were Gurkhas I thought this was quite an appropriate article to post up (yes sorry it's from the Wail).

The Wail said:
Gurkha ordered back to UK after beheading dead Taliban fighter

A Gurkha soldier has been flown back to the UK after hacking the head off a dead Taliban commander with his ceremonial knife to prove the dead man’s identity.

The private, from 1st Battalion, Royal Gurkha Rifles, was involved in a fierce firefight with insurgents in the Babaji area of central Helmand Province when the incident took place earlier this month.

His unit had been told that they were seeking a ‘high value target,’ a Taliban commander, and that they must prove they had killed the right man.

The Gurkhas had intended to remove the Taliban leader’s body from the battlefield for identification purposes.

But they came under heavy fire as their tried to do so. Military sources said that in the heat of battle, the Gurkha took out his curved kukri knife and beheaded the dead insurgent.

He is understood to have removed the man’s head from the area, leaving the rest of his body on the battlefield. thumbup

This is considered a gross insult to the Muslims of Afghanistan, who bury the entire body of their dead even if parts have to be retrieved.

British soldiers often return missing body parts once a battle has ended so the dead can be buried in one piece.

A source said: ‘Removing the head in this way was totally inappropriate.’

Army sources said that the soldier, who is in his early 20s, initially told investigators that he unsheathed his kukri – the symbolic weapon of the Gurkhas – after running out of ammunition.

But later the Taliban fighter was mutilated so his identity could be verified through DNA tests.

The source said: ‘The soldier has been removed from duty and flown home. There is no sense of glory involved here, more a sense of shame. He should not have done what he did.’

The incident, which is being investigated by senior commanders, is hugely embarrassing to the British Army, which is trying to build bridges with local Afghan communities who have spent decades under Taliban rule.

It comes just days after a rogue Afghan soldier murdered three British troops from the same Gurkha regiment.

Who gives a fk about upsetting them.

The reason why we're never told the Taliban casualties is in case it upsets certain people.

Sorry, but if you don't want to get upset, tell your brothers to stop shooting at us and crawl out of the stoneage.
