I'm usually pretty good at finding stuff on t'internet, but am having a few issues getting reasonable rates for car hire between Northanmpton area and Dover (taking Mum on a cruise) mainly because the bloody offices are shut on a Sunday and it's one way hire for each leg.

Anyone got any cheap recommendations? I need a medium estate (picking up a friend on the way so 3 suitcases, a wheelchair and two old women besides the driver)

Northampton(area) to Dover pick up weekend of 24/25, drop off 26th.

Enterprise are good, they do one way hire, they even come and pick you up from your house if you need them to.

I did this from Cornwall to Herts, there is a surcharge of £25 IIRC.

Enterprise was the company I looked at.....for when I travel down south to get my car of choice, can't see me getting it in Scotland.

Anyways, i'm rambling, for a Ford Ka it was pretty cheap and could do one-way. About £19 plus the charges.

Depends on the hire car company, but if the hiring branch is a franchise one then they will tend to charge a lot for one way hires as they have to send one of their drivers to retrieve the car particularly if the destination branch is not part of their franchise group.

I used to work for Hertz managing their corporate accounts and dealing with franchise branches was a nightmare as, in similar scenarios, they would either refuse to supply cars or try to charge excessive amounts which they were not allowed to as the rates had been pre-negotiated for the coprporate clients.

I believe Enterprise own all their branches hence why they are able to offer competitive prices.

I'll be coming back the same way a couple of weeks later but I doubt that will swing any franchise holder in my direction, eh?!

It might do - if you agree to pay for the car during the intervening period ;-)
