Our garden has a few paths formed from concrete slabs. It looks a little ugly and we'd like to lay some paving slabs over the top. Just looking for advice on what I need to lay between the concrete and the slabs. Not done anything like this before so go easy on the jargon! Any help much appreciated.

4 building sand to 1 cement with a drop of Febmix or similar. If the bed is going to be more than an inch or so then use plastering sand instead of building, mix so the slabs will tap down fairly easy.

Cheers for this. Assume you mean 4 parts sand to one cement? No water? Can I just mix this by hand in a suitable container? What is a suitable container? Is the Febmix a hardener? Do I need some sort of grout between the slabs afterwards?

Sorry, I really haven't done anything like this before!

Thanks again

If i were you, i'd run it past a reputable flag-layer first.

When i worked in Civils, to lay rigid on rigid was always a no-no. The strength of one will impact on the other - either way - and will cause them to crack. You may need to smash up and crush the slabs below and try to compact the crushed material.

Just a thought and apols if this causes any doubt - but a reputable flagger not too hungry for the work should give you a fair answer.

Febmix is a plasticiser that stops mortar from shrinking and cracking. You are effectivly mixing mortar but not adding water.

Mix the sand cement in a barrow. 4 spades sand to 1 cement. Mix thoroughly and spread out to required depth. Lay flags and knock down with a rubber mallet.

I'm no expert but done similar diy jobs before. Bear that in mind :-)
