It's sweeping generalisation time!
Discussion
Well... I say sweeping generalisation, what I mean is what I have observed in my 4 years working in a tourist shop in Dartmouth.
About 90% of women cannot pay for things properly!!
What I mean by this is when I have a very busy shop I want thing to run fast and smooth so I can serve more people and hopefully take more money. Why is it that most of these women wait until I have taken for all of their items and only AFTER do they look for their purse?!?!?! About 2 minutes later do they locate their purse in their f
king handbag which is about the same size as Wales and then realise they have got the wrong purse and then go hunting for their change purse!
First of all why do they wait until the last possible moment to get their purse out? What happened to planning ahead?
Secondly, why do they have one purse for notes and one for coinage when there is more than enough room for both in the note purse?
Oh, and before the resident females get at me for being sexist these are my observations from the time I have spent in the shop. About 5% of men do this and they are always the ones with a rucksack and walking boots.
Truly boils my piss!
Has anyone else noticed this? And any more generalisations that we can assume from out observations of the general public?
Cheers,
Bob

Sympathise with the OP to be honest, always happens at petrol stations. Additionally annoying when the shell petrol attendant has to try and flog every customer the special offer mints that are two for £1.

"Would you like a bar of chocolate? Have you got a nectar card? Are you collecting for schools? Would you like to let god into your life? Would you like a VAT receipt? Would you like to stop banging your head on the glass partition!"
Just let me go!
When I paid for my fuel at a Shell station last night the woman serving was clearly having a debate with her co worker about how old she looked. It came to my turn for paying for fuel and before allowing me to pay she demanded that I gave her a honest and truthfull answer as to what age she looked.
Me being a nice guy refused to say and eventually she ground me down to comming up with ages which were politley under estimated. Eventually I paid for my fuel but she witheld my reciept as she wanted an honest answer......this answer was wrong and I was pleased to be behind the glass. All this time I was thinking "COME ON WOMAN THERE IS A QUE".
But yes having worked in retail people are a complete pain. Its usually the thick people that give you a hard time to mask thier ignorance.

Thank you Wendyg. It has not taken me 4 years to realise that the vast majority of the general public are as thick as two short planks, it has just seemed to be a larger problem today with more people doing it. And as for the newspaper headline comment, its PH and the lounge, I am not going to reveal the deepest problem in my life at the moment.
But it does still astound me at the general lack of intelligence of my customers.

I always thought a massively over-complex and frankly quite unworkable solution would be, rather than building staff costs into the margin of the products sold, individually billing each customer according to the staff time they've used.
I have, of course, only thought this because I always end up being the one person in a shop in "OBTAIN ITEMS." mode when everybody else is in an, "oh yes, they've made 50p coins smaller haven't they... tell you what, it'll only take ten minutes for me to find a pound note at the bottom of my handbag, either that or I'm sure I've got some pesetas here, it's all money isn't it, from our trip to Benidorm, lovely that was, let me tell you about it..." kind of mood.
I would feel much better if everybody made no attempt at displaying anything like basic human emotional contact and did their shopping in a grim but ruthlessly efficient mindset, thus making British shops appear not unlike archive footage of life in a communist state.

How's it looking round the Cherub now?
Was upset to see it, hoping the damage can be repaired in time, but as normal the media has gone quiet on progress.
As for the public, I deal with them as little as often possible, although we have a good mixture of real sweeties and some less than capable people who you wonder how they manage to get up in the morning.

It always amazes me the number of people that don't realise they will need to pay. And they've been standing in a queue for ten minutes inspecting their toes and picking their fingers.
Then there's the people who have three lots of shopping they want to pay for separately.
Then there are the ones that ask all sorts of queries. Then buy what they've basketed. Turn to leave. Turn back for a random lottery. Turn to leave. Turn back for a top up mobile. Turn to leave. Turn back to top up pre-pay electric. Turn to leave. Then require some rizlas. Turn to leave. Now want 3 very specific different scratch cards from exact positions on the roll. Always at the busiest time of day. And then just as I'm about ready to re-enact 'Falling Down' they apologise which sends me right over the edge.
All these people I curse.
Then the other day I blanked on my PIN and had no other way to pay! Got 25 yards up the road and remembered. Doh!

My missus suffers from a complete lack of planning ahead and at times is is bloody infuriating.
Let's examine a few of the more annoying elements of a trip to the supermarket.
We go out in the car, me driving. We pull up into a parking space, and despite the fact that I have had to drive, park, switch off in addition to what we both have to do (removing the seat belt, open door and get out) she is still faffing about with handbags and all sorts of s
t while I wait outside to lock the bloody doors. Why the f
k can't she sort all that out as we are arriving, have it on her lap and be ready to exit? If she is driving it is even worse of course as we need to enter the parking spaces at iceberg speed or it'll be another trip to the panel beaters. As we stop, I have all the s
t ready, pass her handbag to her and get out... to the wait for her to sort out all sorts of imaginary s
t and do the same.
So we go round... and round the store - cos the list is in no particular order at all, and she has not read ahead with any consciousness of where we are in the store and what we might be able to collect from the list as we are in the area. Later, while lumping stuff onto the checkout conveyor belt (no aircraft though) she suddenly, she remembers that we need something, and effs off to the other end of the store, to return just in time to add them to the dwindling stock on the belt... with an armload of other items she found on her travels.
Just about to pay, as I have put the last few things in the bags, I have got my card ready to pay ahead of time... and all of a sudden the needle in a haystack search begins for the "coupon" in the dark depths of the bag. Cue the rest of the queue behind going red in the face and me going even redder. "Let me just pay the bloody dipstick and get the f
k out of here", oh no... it's a coupon... it must be found... it's double Nectar points... and when she eventually finds it, it is out of bloody date!
It's the same with everything - if we go back to the car with me pushing the trolley and her with nothing to carry except her bloody handbag, and I have the keys, they are out of my pocket, in my hand to open it and get straight in. If she has the keys, we get up to the car and the hunt in the bowels of the handbag for keys begins while we inevitably stand in the pissing rain with the goods getting wet.
We get back home, onto the drive, and I am out of the car, front door open, back to the car and unloading the shopping. She of course is still faffing around in the car. Just to put this into perspective, the supermarket is precisely one mile from our house, so how the f
k can she get so disorganised in 2-3 minutes?
And why is it that whenever I get into her car, even in the middle of the most miserable winter's weather, her sunvisor is always down blocking half the windscreen?
Jeez!
apologies for the bad language but this is one thing about her that really gets my goat

I do know what you mean though, I write my shopping list so that I do not double back and I usually walk to the far end of the store as the tills are always less busy (I don't trust the automated tills, I'm nearly 30 and so I am allowed to have stupid technophobic views). My shopping experience is very efficient if I'm shopping alone...

It's a bloody awful mess, a real shame, especially as the Thai restaurant that went up was around 500 years old. Thankfully for me though our shop was built about 150 years before the other buildings (some parts of the shop date from circa 1370) and so there is a stone wall about 1.5 feet thick separating us from the fire. It was very close though!I'm glad that it isn't just me that gets pretty angry at these people wasting everyone's time! Another thing is the people who insist on giving you the exact change in silvers and coppers! I DON'T WANT £360 IN 20 PENCE PIECES!
Years ago the company I worked for came up with a product which could be sold to the General Public, rather than to the Design Engineers and Technical distributors who were the existing client base.
Because it was so different, and the product needed so fitting to clients equipment, we sought advice from a guru in such matters as to how to pitch instructions, information videos, etc.
The advice we were given was 'Never underestimate the stupidity of the General Public', and after running various Focus groups we saw exactly what the expert meant.
I still find on EBay that some people 'buy' the product I sell, don't respond to invoices, polite 'is everything Ok, do you still want the product' e-mails, then eventually I have to open an unpaid item dispute, its like an internet version of taking the trolley to the till then walking out the shop leaving everything.

You chose to marry an idiot. As did she.

Being an idiot is one of my best features and useful to help understand some of the other folks on PH.
You should have met my first wife, now that was a scatty lady! I only got married to this one 7 years ago, but to be fair, she also has a lot of redeeming features despite seeming to be disorganised just to drive me mad. She is actually quite bright and still looks good enough to be, as some may say, a "trophy wife" compared to me.

Indeed. I was in a busy tourist trash shop in Paignton many years ago, and the biotch behind the counter muttered some derogatory comment along the lines of 'these bloody grockles wasting my time'. Now I know why.
You have my deepest sympathy.
I saw red and politely pointed out that if it wasn't for us f
king grockles her f
king poxy little seaside town would still be living on the f
kin' breadline and spending 23 hours a day in fishing boats, stinking of kippers, just to keep above starvation level!I was young and drunk. She was gobsmacked and suddenly silent. I beleive I won the match that day.

One purse, coinage checked beforehand to see if enough or to see if csrd needed and where it is in purse before getting to till! (Pin number also entered in double quick time)
I know exactly what you are referring to and whilst you admit it's a sweeping generalisation I had to defend my corner
Meant to add tourists definitely have a holiday brain I lived in Brixham long enough to learn that!
