Sold my car last month to a guy in NZ. he paid the money, arranged everything, and last week a car transport company came to collect the car. A guy came with a large covered double deck lorry so he he had to leave it on the main road as we live in a narrow road.

The guy walked up the drive, knocked the door and started to inspect the car, at which point I came out to hand him the keys. he continues to walk around the car, gets on his hands and knees at the front, then the back, then the sides... He keeps marking on the sheet he has on the clip board. After a while he hands me the board and asks for a signature...

At this point I notice that on the diagrams of the various elevations of the car, there are x marks all over it. I challenged him as to what they were and he said they were marks... he said it was company policy to note every single imperfection on the car...

I then asked him to show me where the the corresponding marks on the car were, starting with the ones he had put on the door mirrors... he pointed to what were actually the remnants of dead flies, small ones at that! I scratched them off with my nail and moved on to a few more marks... there weren't any, in fact the car was immaculate, save for a couple of touched in stone chips. he had some "X"'s down by the front spoiler... again, there was not a mark on the car.

I refused to sign the paperwork and suggested he started with a clean sheet. he said he didn't have one and was in a hurry, and it "didn't matter" I refused again and he got quite stty... In the end he went back to the lorry and got a clean sheet. he then went around the car again and marked on it the odd touched up stone chip, and handed me the paperwork. I annotated it to say that the "X" were touched in chips and signed the bottom, ensuring I had a copy...

He then drives to car off to load it into the lorry... I grabbed my camera to take a last few pictures, for the album, just in time to see him catch the front spoiler on the ramps madmadmad he was not impressed that I was there with the camera!!! luckily there were only a few scratches to the underside as it "just" caught it...

I can imagine that a lot of people just sign, and then if the company does any damage they can say it was already done.... I wish i could show you the filthy look he is giving me in the picture!!!

This is just like returning a hire car, they will try a mark every single thing they can find and then rag it round the compound as they park it.

Why are you worried if they guy has already paid?

Yep - what the hell has that guy got on his head?!

don't worry about it, I don't think that info will go to the new owner - it's just for the transport company...

the guy paid a fair price for an immaculate car... he was a decent guy, i didn't want him screwed over by a company that he was paying to transport his car...
