Looking for a new Daily Drive ... something special - input?
Discussion
Hi guys
Im currently looking for a new daily drive, however saying that, im in no rush what so ever
i have 2 cars to sell eventually, a merc 190 2.3 16v cosworth which is currently on the market (even if the price is a little on the optimistic side) and an R33 GTST running 425bhp which is my current daily
however, i always seem to end trying to make my car both comfortable to drive with good audio for daily use, as well as good performance and as you can imagine, they dont exactly go hand in hand... for example, the 190 wasnt so bad however doesnt have AC and was just too hot to drive in the summer, that and its had a full body restoration so im scared to park it anywhere, hwoever it was pretty quite with enough poke... the r33 however is just ... loud ... knocks out alot of the lower/mid bass from my system but performance is .. fun
so.. with that in mind, im now looking to sell both my cars, and get 2 new ones,
1 for daily drive, comfortable, quite, good MPG while being "different" (i cant seem to bring myself to drive a stock shopping car)
1 for track/rally/drift days etc, a weekend toy that im not afraid to scratch like the 33
however, 1 step at a time... (hi btw, im new here :P)
so.. daily drive... good mpg, quite, ideal for a sound system, some poke/performance would be nice but not 100% necessary (ive got accustom to driving performance cars as dailys the past few years lol), cheapish on insurance would be a bonus (modern classics would be more than ideal esp with modern engines in!), nice comfortable interior, and something that doesnt melt your eyes or bore you when you look at it :P
budget is anything up to 12k... obviously the lower the better :P quite happily drive a 2k modern classic, or better yet a classic with a modern (quite) engine in
so.. what can you recommend?
to get the ball rolling, heres some of my old dailys and what ill probably end up doing something similar to the exterior styling.

ive even tempted to get another 190 and throw a quieter (and quicker) engine in...
we have most of the tools and space available for any mods/fixes needed so project cars/shells are more than welcome also! although want to steer away from anything that requires paint work or has a like new paint job! i dont want to be scared to leave it over night like i am with the 190 and 33
again no rush, so time isnt a factor getting the thing on the road, this is all still early days and no doubt some aspects of the "plan" will change at some point, just looking for a list of potential motors atm
so far i have the following.
keep the 190, man up and stop being a pansy about the condition
another 190 with engine transplant
e46 1.6 - 2.5 ... maybe m3 ... but them im getting to where i am now... performance with silly audio and 2 tons worth of sound deadening!!!
old school porsche
old school bmw
old school merc
after something that looks "smart" or "classy" or anything that doesnt look like i dropped out of fast/furious like the 33 :/ think ill leave that for the weekends if things go as planned.
Thanks
Chris

I remember you from the 190 owners site (Benny BTW)
M5 is a good shout, what about a 964 Porsche? I have heard both side of the coin for these cars, some say they're a money pit, others say they cost very little to keep going.
I guess the same could be levied against any car really. M5s can aquire some heavy bills too IIRC. How long would a set of rears last?
Aiming too high?

Doubt you could swing it for 12k, but, may come across one with a broader search?

Mondeo ST220 is always a good recommendation for a reasonably quick everyday car that's useful for taking passengers, wood from B&Q, rubbish to the tip, etc, etc.
Rather underrated car, but thirsty for what they are if that's a consideration. Some form of Subaru Legacy perhaps if you're into Jap stuff?
ahh Hi benny
the 911s are nice, however after something a little more practical for a daily, with a bit more space :P
DB7s are gorgeous however think ill be dreaming i bit if i think i can afford to buy, run and insure one of those at my age
and are the price of what both my daily and track car would be putting me in the same situation i am now, wanting performance and comfort in a single car :P
however in a few years i may well go that route
so far the M5s are very tempting, will give my insurer a call tomorrow and see what the damage would be.

ive always liked jap cars, esp the legnum and legacys, and have always told myself that ill get one as a family car, however, after owning the 33, the build quality of the interior is just ... blah
they look stunning from teh outside but once your inside its another world (and not in a good way)
they seem to make great engines and mechs, but everything else seems to be thrown together and apparently plastic is the only material available :P and the buzzing !! OMG if the exhaust didnt drown out the interior buzzes on the 33 i think i would of gone mad!
they are lovely cars, but im after something built a bit more solid that can withstand 2x12" subs without rattling to bits. hense the favoring of the old german motors
that being said i do want a jap track toy

Audi S2?
5 cylinder warble, reasonably fast- can be made to go pretty fast with the likes of Dialynx. I've driven a couple- my mate is a complete S2 w
e & has had a few- I've spotted one in the classifieds he used to own
They have a huge boot & are pretty reliable.

Quite rare to come across a low mileage example.

Car number one: e39 BMW 530i/540i.
Car number two: Mk1 MX5 - strip it, 'charge it, track it.
You'll also have a saving on your budget if you buy well.
Job Done.

ok new criteria for those intereted in throwing a few more ideas my way
new budget 1-4k for a daily drive, must be good MPG, enough torque to tow another car and cheap on insurance ... additional points for looking good while towing
Maybe a BMW E39 530d? Torque and economy, might even look OK if there is an M-sport version....

seems to be the best bet atm, although think may take some time to find one in black, cream leather and if pos double glazing, or was that only on M5s?Gassing Station | General Gassing [Archive] | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
