Ok which car, Astra VXR or Scirocco GT2.0 TD ?

I realise that there is 100bhp and 25MPG between them! It would be leased so not worried about residuals etc. The lease prices come out at about the same.

I have driven a Scirocco 2.0TFSI and it seemed a bit sterile but i haven't tried the Astra (yet).

Over to you.

True, but the Scirocco interior and spec seems quite good. I haven't been inside an Astra for a while so i wonder how it compares.

OK the Astra is like a baked bean can on wheels. So tinnie - very chavvy image and not very good - so many better cars in its field - meganne R26, Ford RS etc.

The scirocco is a great car - the TDi does 45-50mpg easily but get the magnetic suspension as the sports setting is great fun whilst the comfort is great for long runs. Also get rear park assist as you cant see anything out the back and the doors are horrible to get in to/out of in a confined space as the seats are quite far forward for a 3 door!

If it's anything like the Vauxhall Meriva (in 'Design' trim no less) courtesy car I had last week, probably horrific!

Hmmm two brands i normally universally dispise (Monaro and VXR8 aside)

Astra will be more fun, but more expensive to run

Rocco will be boring but much cheaper to run.

So its Fun Vs cost for me.

How many miles do you do? How important is MPG to you? Bearing in mind that a heavy petrol bill each month can get very tiring.

Looks are subjective, but i'd go for the rocco every time. Interior quality is likely to be better in the rocco too (Ive not been in either, but from Vaux vs VW past experience, the Vauxhall will be ste)

Good points, yes the rear window on the Scirocco is tiny.

The only 'Rocco I've driven is the R, but I'd take that over the VXR any day.

Incidently - why apologise for a what car thread on a site devoted to people talking about cars? That's what it's here for. smile

VXR for me. Roc is nice but I like the 3-door Astra and interior.

would be the astra vxr just for the fun they offer. you'll probly avarage 28 mpg with a fair bit of enthustatic driving, but can average about 36mpg on a normal miss daisy drive.

i personally looked at the golf gti at the same time i looked at the vxr, i felt it was a dull car, and nothing speacil. i've had my vxr for a year and a half i have not stopped smiling, some have the odd small problem but thats why we have warrenty.

Is the VXR oversteer myth true, and if so is it a tyre eater?

its all dependant on driving style, you can happily push the vxr's into the corners as with any car you just have to know the limits. i tested the car going round a roundabout, once on there put my foot down whilst turning and the car carried on in a straightline. the best way to find out is to test drive the cars, tyre wise my fronts lasted a respectably 16k miles the rears last for age's i think mine where about 25k, that was mainly normal day to day driving with the odd blast when i felt like it, other owners i have heard have lasted 6k miles.

Any car with a muppet at the wheel can be a tyre eater.

For example, I got through a new set of rear boots in 2.5k on my Chimaera once..............

But then I've had a set last 10k and still look good (still 3.5mm left).

So basically, it is down to the style of the driving.
