(Not) Good Vibrations

So went for a meeting at work today, approx 30 miles away, glorious day so had to take the Tiv.

On the way back last part is motorway, and taking it at normal mway speeds no surprises until a couple of miles from my junction.

Then they started, slowly building up until I could not even hold the steering wheel and car was all over the place - really not good vibrations !

Immediate thought was a puncture, so took my exit and pulled over just after slip road. Got out expecting to see a mullered tyre..............but no; nothing. Generally checked over the car, no wobbly wheels, all wheel weights seemed to be in place ?

So now I'm confused. Jumped back in and gingerly limped back to the office. Right as rain, no hint of any vibrations; nothing.

Just drove her home, completely back to normal even at speed.

Anyone else had any similar strange experiences. Will get her up on the ramp at the weekend for a thorough check.

Sorry to hear of your woes.

Were the vibrations road or engine speed dependent?

From the front or rear?

Which section of motorway was it (I'm from that neck of the woods ) - could it be a poor road-surface, possibly coupled with non-optimal tyre pressures?

Not really woes, just a bit of a fright !

I didn't really hang around to explore the nature of the vibrations. Only real observations were I was doing 70+ and the steering wheel was hard to hold with the vibration.

Section of road was south bound M11 at Duxford junction. I am starting to think it was some bad truck ruts which set off. As I said it seemed so bad I thought it was a puncture !

Could be the diff when it gets nice and hot. Had it on my old Chimaera when there was a problem with the crown wheel & pinion.

Never really considered that. Was it enough to transfer juddereing through to the steering wheel ?

My T350 has only done 11k though so hope the diff is OK still !

Is the juddering primarily coming through the seat of your pants or the steering wheel? The latter would indicate the problem is more likely at the front of the car.

Is the juddering primarily coming through the seat of your pants or the steering wheel? The latter would indicate the problem is more likely at the front of the car.

When it occured (it has now vanished ?!) it was definitely coming through the steering wheel, which as you correctly point out indicates the front of the car. I am just amazed that such a severe vibration could just dissapear.

I'd rule out my diff theory then. It could be any manner of things. If it was when cornering I'd say engine mounts, but on a motorway you're not doing much of that. Loose steering rack? Problem with one of many bushes and ball joints? Remember it gets very toasty under the bonnet of a TVR after a bit in this warm weather, which could be bringing something to light you wouldn't otherwise notice.
