My cousin is desperate to join the BIB. She has been for years and is just coming up to the age where she can.
Im a bit worreid though as she has flat feet. Is this going to be a problem ?
Im sure one of my mates got turned down years ago for having that condition ??

Can anyone shed any light on it ? Her next choice is the army if the police wont have her !

Taken from the police could you site:
Forces will reject applicants with:

Diabetes Mellitus or those who are clinically overweight
Persistent Upper Gastro Intestinal Tract Disease
A history of inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative Colitis or Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Non-asthmatic chronic respiratory disorders
Asthma (currently on treatment, including inhalers)
Spontaneous Pneumothorax (on two or more occasions)
A history of either back disorder or knee dysfunction requiring treatment; recurrent dislocation of major joint; major foot deformities
A history of psychotic illness
Most neurotic or stress related psychiatric disorders
Drug misuse or alcoholism
Eating disorders
Sociopathic behaviour
On psychotropic medication
A history of Menieres Disease
Perforated eardrum
Less than average hearing
Hypertension requiring treatment
Uncorrected congenital heart disease
A history of coronary heart disease
An epileptic seizure after five years of age
Any degenerative neurological disease
Chronic genito-urinary disorders

Which Force is she looking to join?
To make sure it is probably best to call recruitment for the force she want to apply to.

That would seem to rule out a good many ALREADY there!

Sorry! It was just asking for that!

After all - the BiB did introduce that cookery book due to worries that you are all "getting a bit chubby around the middle!"

And we do keep reading in the papers about how stressed out you all are - (all that paperwork resulting from copping us hardened criminals tootling around in cars!)

psychotic and sociopathic - that's prerequisite for the top job! (Wonder who I'm thinking of there?)

Hypertension requiring treatment - sorted with a speed gun!

Not a job you can do if unfit - all that cycling, roller blading, driving fast cars, sitting in talivans, sitting in talivans, sitting in talivans.....

Seriously, though - not a job you can do if unfit, and not one I would like to do, and despite the above bit of fun (which I am sure you will see as just that ), do actually respect what you do! (except when you are setting speed traps - of course!)

seriously though wouldn't flat feet come under classification of

"major foot deformities"

Flat feet when being pushed hard in training is no joke.

Hi,

I applied to join around 14 months ago - bit of a career change. I've passed all the checks and assesment day and i'm due to go for my medical next Thursday. I'll see if i can ask and get some details from the medical officer.

I would have thought as long as she can continuosly run/jog for around 30-40mins with no problems that she should be ok.

Thanks. I'm a bit concerned. She will be heartbroken if they wont have her.

Hi WIK,

I had my medical last week - went well - re your question about the flat footedness. It seems that she will be ok as long as she can perform the required tests / manouveres!

Email me offline if you'd like a bit more detail.

Cheers

Yeah I was wondering about that!...I've contemplated applying but kind of assume that with one slightly dodgy eye I might be refused....

I was turned down for being slightly red/green colour blind.

If the Police wouldn't take her for having flat feet, the army's even less likely to do so.

JohnL,

I'm also slightly red/green colour blind as are most of the male population. I have passed that part of the medical without any problems.

Maybe the West Mids need coppers more than where you are?

Thanks UIL9794. Sounds like she could quite probably be OK then.

Cheers for all the responses everyone.

WRT eyesight, you need to be able to read the second line down the chart unaided. This is the standard for Sussex at least.

14 months!!! Damn, that's mental! I thought around 5-6 months was the norm?

Hi Julian,

No 14 months to get to the medical stage is quite normal if you're appling for West Mids. I applied (returned the original application form) back in early December 2002. I had various feedback during March/May/August which was based on filling in more forms. November 03 i had the assesment day, and was told i would have my medical within the next 8-10 weeks. Perhaps with the Christmas break things got delayed and i had my medical last week. Generally the fittness is around 2-5 weeks after the medical then a further 2-5 weeks for an offer to be made with a start date a little later on.

I've been predicted a start date of late August early September.

So that could be a total of 20-21 months from the inital apllication being returned.

If you want to do it start the process well before you might want to actually start training.
