Hello all

I have just purchased a 2002 4.6is X5 this weekend. After having the 4.4i I thought it would be a nice upgrade. Unfortunatley when I picked it up it had a few niggles - which we thought were easily solved (I know a lesson to be learned for the future).

1. The Sat Nav Unit was missing
2. The Volume wasn't working on the Radio, cd & Satnav
3. The CD Magazine was missing
4. on the screen it says CODE where the stereo options are

To remedy the faults we have: and these are the results so far - any help suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated

1. Ordered in a replacement unit (identical to the one that was in my 4.4i) but has arrived this morning and doesn't work - took to a bmw specialist who said it wasn't the right unit - so am meeting up with the owner of our 4.4i and will try his out to see if that works
2. The specialist thinks the volume could be down to the sat nav not being present (the circuit not being complete) but thinks it could be something more
3. Have ordered a new magazine for the changer
4. Where would I find a code to make the stereo work?

The car is going in Friday to have these things looked at again, but on driving the car last night an 'S' starting flashing up on the instrument panel next to the gear selector options and the revs started to go funny. since realised that the car had slipped into manual buy itself - never happened on the journey from London home so not sure what that is either

My last car was fantastic and I am gutted that we have chosen a car that potentially has major faults

Thanks for readng so far - if you can offer any helpful advice on the problems please feel free

Rebecca

As a fellow X5 driver, I’ll do my best to help, but in the mean time it may be worth searching on xoutpost.com as there is a wealth of knowledge there.

I think the Sat Nav drive should be the MK4 drive, which is dvd based. I'm not sure what year your 4.4i was, but I think the MK4 drive went into service at some point in 2002, so your 4.6is should be dvd.

When you turn the car on, and the screen powers up, what colour is it? Blue/White or Black/Orange?

Normally the code for the stereo is in the documentation, but iirc it’s not set "on" as default. Perhaps try default combinations?

The "S" normally means the gear selector has been moved to the right for sports mode, but I don't recall seeing mine flash before.

Did you buy the car from a dealer?

And did you test drive the car, if yes, did the Sat Nav / radio work then?

Thank you Nat H,

I brought the car from auction and so was unable to drive it first.

The Sat Nav screen is blue / white does this help identify the type required?

I will take a look at the link but if you have any other ideas please let me know.

Thanks again

Does the screen look like this?

Or something from the 1980's?

The white and blue screen (from the 80's) generally means the TV module is not controlling the output to the screen, as it's either; missing, broken, or the connecters are loose.

The TV module is located under the spare wheel, under the German helmet, and beneath the plastic cover.

Guide to finding it, can be found here here

It’s pretty straight forward to get to, but it does take quite a while, prob at least 20 mins.

Its worth checking that all the equipment is there, and plugged in ok.

When I get home, i'll disconnect my Nav Drive to see what happens to the screen, as I believe it stays the same as the picture above, minus the option for GPS Nav.

I have a 2002 4.4i built in Nov 2001 and it has the MK3 CD based satnav. www.x5drivers.com is a pretty handy place but I just checked and its down at the moment.

Yeah, X5Drivers was great, but it's been down for a good 7 weeks now, whichbid a shame.

A 2002 4.6iS should have a mk3 CD drive not the later mk4 DVD drive (although it is a worthwhile upgrade)

I think it is the navigation drive that drives the user interface so if the screen output looks like something from a Sinclair ZX81, this will be why. However, that shouldn't affect audio output - you should have a BM54 radio module (this is a common failure on older cars, and so may be why you've got no audio, or worse still, it's been removed - they fetch good money on ebay)

Hope you get you're problems solved.

Regarding code, these units do not have a factory pin code as such - may be worth looking at the user manual, as I think there is a four digit code that can be set by the owner.

Hello,

Right after a good feret around in the boot we have located the TV Module so unfortunatley that rules that one out (Unless it is damaged)

Gary, where would we find the BM54 Radio Module to check that it is in the car.

Forgot to add when BMW specialist plugged in diagnostic checker it couldn't locate any of the audio / TV / Phone / sat Nav system at all.

Just to top it all off the car keeps flicking into Failsafe Mode and then developing a misfire.

Any more assistance would be greatfully appreciated.

In the meantime I will keep drying my faithful little run around :-)

The radio module is next to the tv module. Whilst you're in that region it might be worth checking the battery is ok, as a weak battery can cause issues.
