I've tried the sword method in the mess before, you place the rear of the sword (you'd blunt the sharp edge) up against the ridge near the mouth, slide the sword down and then bring it sharply upwards.

It "should" take the neck of the bottle cleanly off. Straight away you have to pour some out to remove any glass shards so don't do it anywhere you value the carpet.

Obviously the neck will now be VERY sharp and you should pour the whole bottle straight away so don't do this at a romantic dinner for two or it will look like an AA date.

Don't you just push the cork into the bottle?

Done that with Champagne before - actually very easy to do!

Just don't use a toilet to open a bottle of wine... (someone find the link on PH). wink (How's that for a subtle "REPOST!")

My old boss' 10 year old daughter used to do that in the pub he owned... with a machete! it used to frighten and amaze the customers in equal measures I think.

It's all very well but the wine will be undrinkable after it's been shaken up like that!

I have just opened a bottle of red with the shoe method.

I suggest using a hard shoe.

I suggest easing the cork out the final few mm very gently.

I suggest wearing anything other than white...

That is all.

Do you, perhaps, mean "a corkscrew" ?

I'd hazard a guess that those who need to open wine bottles without a corkscrew are also fairly ambivalent about 'decanting' anyway and aren't drinking filthy but outstanding old Bordeaux.

How many people tonight are going to end up with massive home insurance claims for smashed plasterboard, ruined carpet and glass wounds to the hand. Other than that its a very very good way of opening a bottle of wine. Im off to try it too.

Blowtorch to heat up the air in the neck of the bottle and push the cork out.

Hypodermic needle through the cork to inject air.

Small nest of termites to eat their way through the cork.

Squirt of WD40 on the cork to lubricate it until out she pops.

Apply liquid nitrogen to the cork to freeze it making it shatter.

Time machine to accelerate aging of cork which shrivels and falls out.

Bore small hole in base of bottle, insert bottle on metal rod which pushes cork out.

Irradiate wine so that it causes a meltdown and sinks through the glass.

Have I got to think of everything around here?
