Well, Mrs Puggit and I have returned from NY with our trophy - a 15Gb iPod! No mini's were available, and we managed to get a 15Gb iPod for just $20 more at a reasonable $270

Anyhow....

1) I can't seem to charge it off my laptop. I'm using the firewire adaptor - to shrink the connector size from 6pin to 4pin I believe. Is the firewire connector removing power?

2) The plug which came with it is obviously US style, but can be removed from the adaptor, revealing that you can plug in one of those figure of 8 style plugs you use on a stereo... Is it safe to do this?

Ta muchly to the PH collective!

1. laptops don't have powered firewire sockets as a general rule. The 2 pins you are losing on the conversion from 6-4 pins are the power ones. It will never charge from your laptop.

2. You can, but I'd be inclined to have a look at the apple store or similar and buy a official UK one. It won't be that more expensive I shouldn't have thought.

FYI, check out www.ipodlounge.com, the forum's there are very helpful and I can almost garuntee your question will have been asked before You could even say hello to Docevi1 if you see him

Is the 110V/240V diffreence important, or does it detect voltage and adjust accordingly?

99.9% sure the ipod power adaptors are worldwide multivoltage ones. If it says something like 110/240v on it, it will be and you can quite safely plug a UK 2pin "radio" cable into it.

ipod charges from a 12 volt feed (hence why you can charge from firewire). The adaptor *should* swap nicely. I don't know the spec so don't quote me on it.

Well, charging off the mains via the stereo lead worked nicely The adaptor does state 110/240 volts.

Currently loading up my albums as Mrs Puggit stole the car today and muggins is commuting with the public
