noise on over-run
Discussion
Since having the clutch done ive acquired a sort of grating noise around the gearbox on the overrun at about 3500 to 3000 rpm, it stops immediately if i accelerate.. also is it normal for the gear knob to vibrate alot when getting close to the redline?
Any thoughts are much appreciated
cheers

rattle? 10p being it a heatshield thats been knocked..Any thoughts are much appreciated

If this noise only started after a clutch change then it's more likely to be caused by the power-plant-frame being slightly mis-aligned. I'm not sure of the details of how to fix it myself but I'm sure OnlyMX5s will be able to fill you in with more info (or a quick search will probably dig it up).
Did you replace the spigot bearing at the same time? my guess would be this. My car does the exact same and it has been reliably diagnosed by an mx5 expert with experience in the matter. Cant be bothered to replace yet though- has been doing it for years and no other noticable side effects (not worth pulling the clutch out for anyway)
i've been trying to track this down for almost a year now, drives me to the point of wanting to get rid of the damn car.
to my dumbness, after looking on miata.net i remembered i haven't taken the rear box heatshield off and tried that but there's so much vibration with the rattle i'm suspecting diff.
my rattle came after a clutch/flywheel change, and i ensured the ppf was measured and set at the correct clearance:

brand new release bearing, flywheel, clutch, low mileage gearbox, new uj's/prop new cv's + regreased + half shaft, new diff mounts
and the fecking noise is still there
one question though - if you're in high revs then come off the throttle and start braking quite hard, as you go through the 3-4k where the vibration is the worst, do you feel a jerking back and fourth, like slack getting taken up then released?
this is what made me wonder about lash in the diff caused by pinion bearing play

Possibly not your problem but my gearknob vibrated a lot when closing in on the red line when it had one of those crappy ebay short shifters on (put on by the previous owner), as soon as I went back to stock it was fine... but perhaps it could be worn rubbers and such like where the gearstick is.

That's exactly what I've got!! Well at least I know the cause and remedy. I've also got a strange whistling noise when I slow to a halt at low speeds. Only happens when the car is warm...had the car in the garage this week( for a new thermostat housing and waterpump) asked them to have a look for the source of the sound, they said they couldn't find anything, said there was a loose baffle in the exhaust, but that is all.. strangely the noise has disappeared though..
with the heavily vibating knob, the gearbox also clicks in, especially when the car is cold, could this also be the shift boots?
cheers for all the advice

As Lazza said if its after a clutch then I'd suspect the PPF isn't aligned correctly.
As your Speedo has now packed up I suspect they didn't refit the sender correctly.
I'm guessing Mr Clutch or similar did it.
Go back, go under the ramp and take a look with them, the big bolts that hold the PPF on should be where they were - ie where the shiney metal is.

Could be - they are cheap to buy and you can replace them yourself so you might as well!As for the specialist, take it there now! You get much better service and I doubt it will be any more expensive.
