I am into making use of free foods.... I have venison in the freezer from a road kill deer. Oven ready rabbit i found on the way to work this morning...also where the season is right we make haw ketchup, sloe gin, rhubarb wine, damson jelly, blackberry pie, wild garlic in olive oil, rhubarb chutney, blackberry wine, hazlenuts, black currants, raspberries, pears, gooseberries, strawberries....... and probably more including gifts fron friends like pidgeon, pheasant, mackrel.. have yet to try squirrel... does anyone have any good ideas for the use of free or home grown foods that are a little bit different ?

You must try squirrel! It’s very tasty, though it has a tendency to dry out so need to be cooked with some duck fat or bacon.

Also worth a try is Coot or Moorhen, they are about the size of a pigeon so you will need a couple each! Its best to just fillet off the breasts.

Limpets are another thing worth a try! They are very tough but taste great! They are great made into chowder.

Common garden snails are pretty good too! Keep them in a bucket for a couple of days with some salad leaves, and then use them in all sorts of recipes.

Minnows make very good fish fry if you are near a clean stream, just like Whitebait.

Can’t think of any others at the moment but will come back if I remember!

Put them in a big bucket or container(with air holes) give them some salad leaves or herbs to feed them on for a day or two, then purge them for a day or two! loads of recipes online as to how to cook them! Though garlic buuter is the best way!

Personally I find 'wild' snails a bit tough, so after the gorging and purging, I stew them with tomatoes, chorizo, chick peas and garlic:

Not as nice as Wild Rocket! I find Hawthorne leaves rather dry and bitter!

Serve up the snail, chorizo and chick pea stew, then tell him what it was after he's eaten it.
