Well the title has basically covered it!

Im 22, currently own a Fiesta ST. Looking for something with a bit more!
I Have my eyes on Early S2 Elises, but struggling to get insured less than £1500!

I've just got a new job and fancy treating myself. I went through the Golf GTTDI phase thinking it would be great on fuel driving to and from work. Then I thought, WTF am I doing looking at spending the best part of £12k on a Diesel Golf for?!

I have no need to transport anything anywhere, the gf's beetle can do that! So i'm thinking small and hot?!
I would want to use it for a daily drive, Approx 30m a day too and from work.

I'm currently getting 32MPG from the ST. Dont really want to be dropping below 25ish...
Reason for the sale of the ST is that a number of apprentices at work have shown an interest at a price im willing to let it go for!

Any other options?

Vx220. Like an elises but, cheaper to service, run and insure.

Maybe I'm biased wink

At that age (saying that makes me feel old) I had a similar dilemma - but decided the Ins costs and (slight) impracticality weren't worth it as my only car.

I went for the Z4 3.0i, which is now in your price range. Insurance is lower, fuel is good, running is pretty cheap all said and done. Practical too (ish). Good compromise between fun sports car, and luxury mile muncher I thought.

£10k can get you a 3.0i model easily, slightly higher mileage, but if you went to say £11k you should get a good spec average miles.

classics and kits are the way insurance wise, although you'll likely need to phone some specialists not just use comparison web sites. Look for a car called a GTM Libra, there are usually a couple for sale. They are quite similar to an Elise, same engine and running gear as an S1. Very similar performance too. But insurance should be a lot cheaper.

There's a thread in the kit car section with a 20-22 year old and one. Well worth a serious look IMO.

A Libra is a bit more practical than an Elise. Bigger cabin, reasonable boot, storage behind the seats. Very good value too. A lot have the VVC engine so quicker than an Elise.

Just don't expect it to be like a production car. Saying that some people do use them as their only car.

Haha yep that's me! Haven't posted much recently! So what's happened now the RS has gone?

Thanks for the hint on Z4, I would prefer a coupe but out of my price range possibly. I've seen a few well kitted out 3.0 with fair mileage for £11k. How much is tax on that?? I'm expecting it to be quite high... Is it even worth looking at the 2.2 and 2.5 models?

I've seen those libra things in the flesh and it's not really my cup of tea but thanks anyway. I still want the car to be comfy, Z4 has all the gadgets (Elise was a bit bare)

Tax is £235 IIRC - not a lot (compared to the later ones anyway).

3.0 is the one to get, 6 speed box means the fuel cost is same (or less on a cruise) than the 2.5 - plus more toys and power.

Oh that's not bad at all! Powwaaaaaaa!
I just need to see if i get bummed on insurance now then! It's going to be like the lotus all over again! Any bets on what I'm likely to get back? I cant imagine it being any lower than 1400 notes.

I suppose I need tinged over to the BMW forum and see what to look out for on these!

I think £1500 at 22 is pretty good!!! Elise is a fab car. Been using my s1 everydaynowt 6 years now. I'm insured with competition car insurance but I think you'll need to be over 25. Worth a phone call though.

Good luck.

Try an S1 111s. Good fun and if go pre 2000 should be able to get classic/limited miles cover and a reasonable price?
Also rember that if you go older/rarer route the money you save on the car not depreciating can go towards insurance. Also look at TVR S2/S3. Fun/Practical/Gorgeous noise/Cheap to run/no depreciation?

A vx220 wouldn't be far behind the golf for economy (and a gazzillion times more fun to drive).
That was my choice at 22, now 28 and still obsessed.

shoutCaterham!

I got mine when I was 23, as my first car, no insurance history other than as named driver on parents' cars, single male, car parked on the street in North London (Holloway) and the first year's insurance was approx £1100. I used it as a daily driver for 5 years.
