you can fit any engine to any car within reason. What are you trying to achieve, and with what budget ?

PS kits are available as a bolt on

subaru flat four can be made to fit(turbo too if you like)quite a few around, then there is the porsche flat six which will require some chassis mods to accomodate the extra two cylinders, air cooled too so no need to fabricate liquid cooling system.have seen v8's fitted but no good if you want a practical camping van as it will encroach into the living area.
but yes anything is possible.

don't dismiss the original engines though, air or watercooled, capacities these days can go up to 2.5lts and more?
as long as they are set up properly with regular fettling it should last a while plus you know you will always be able to get parts no matter where in the world you are.

It'll be a struggle getting a diesel engine in - you'll need to plumb a radiator and intercooler which will be a fair bit of work. I'd stick with the standard engine but get a bit more power out of it. As regards the steering it really isn't that heavy with the standard wheel. The easiest thing to do would be to get an electric power steering system fitted to the column, but they run at about £2k.

you may be able to get a passat diesel lump in there, i know they fitted it to the T25 van as standard. but yes, there would be issues with the plumbing for the rad, maybe it could be mounted around the gearbox area which has a high pressure airflow round it.
