Afternoon all,

It's my old man's 60th birthday next July, and I'd really like to do something special for him. Trouble is, I'm rubbish when it comes to presents / surprises so was wondering whether the collective wisdom of PH could be put to the test.

I'll treat this like a "What Car?" thread in order to get all the relevant details across... so:

He likes (among other things):

Cars and motorsport (more Classic than modern)
Rugby
The outdoors
Planes, engineering and other "man stuff"

He doesn't like:

People making an obvious fuss (so no big surprise parties)
Anything that involves "getting dressed up like a clown" (his words)

I'd like to do something that involves the whole family (so my mum, dad, brother and I) - as well as extended close family (wife / girlfriend / children), but also has a "Dads and lads" element for him, my brother and I.

Initial thoughts were:

1. Goodwood revival for us lads in the day, stay somewhere nice with a good restaurant overnight (so we can have a family meal on the night). The whole "dressing up" thing may not suit though.

2. Le Mans Classic, meal etc as above.

3. Hire him a classic, nice country hotel / meal as above

4. Hot air balloon ride (doesn't seem special enough but he'd really enjoy it)

Budget is up to £500, plus spends. May go over for the perfect occasion.

Right - that's me spent. Over to the floor, and thanks in advance.

Over on another thread, the option of a smutty DVD seems to have gone down quite well...

Funnily enough, I was just reading through that one - not sure my mum would approve...

If your talking about a budget of up to £500, then i think the hot air balloon is favourite. Hiring a hotel will cost way more than that i would have thought. I was going to suggest a racing driving experience like they used to do at donington park, but a) the circuit is kinda fubar right now, and b) its only really for him not the rest of the family.

Fits with your criteria apart from the date... they are every two years and the next one isn't until 2012... sorry!

Day trip to France.

Don't know why but the thought just appeals.

Go the Goodwood route. It doesn't have to be too formal afterwards for a meal. Just a nice local pub would be ok, same with hotel, no need to go too posh.

You've also got Mercedes Benz World between the two - could buy him one of their driving experiences - range of them in time / pricing. Plus MB World is good for a wander around, got some lovely old cars as well as the new stuff.

You don't have to dress up for Goodwood either so no need to worry about that and he would love getting up close to all the cars bikes etc and chatting with the owners.

Good dieras there. For my Dads 60th last year we did the following:
1) Converted all his old cine footage of us as children into DVD format
2) he was a ferret driver in the TA as a young ma, so we got him driving one of those around a field (with fake machine gun making realistic noises)

The attendance of Kent Police armed response unit, when neighbours had heard machine guns firing, was an added bonus!!!

Bugger. You mean they wouldn't reschedule it just for little old me?

Great idea, but as he owns one he's already been and done that one. Thanks again though

I booked my Dad a half day at Bill Gwynne's Rally School in Imprezas and did it myself too.

We both really enjoyed it, but I think I was faster. smile

How about a steam train? You can book days in the cab pulling levers and come home all black in the face.
