Recurring problem with our oil CH/water
Discussion
We have a recurring problem with our oil CH/water which the service people can't sort.
The pump in the airing cupboard starts up of its own accord even though no water/Ch is on. The boiler in the garage, a Trianco, locks out and the orange light comes on. Pressing the button to reset it sometimes starts the boiler going and it runs indefinitely even though everything is switched off, sometimes it doesn't fire up after being reset but the pump in the cupboard continues to run.
The system was serviced a few days ago and they have been back since in a second attempt to cure it. It started doing this prior to the service.
Any thoughts please?

Erm, yes it has motorised valves. These seem to move freely. Not clever enough to answer the other question!
They have been out again today and now replaced a capacitor in the boiler which might stop it locking out, but offered no solution as to why the pump would come on spontaneously and stay on.

Well.
It's important to know that the pump and boiler are both fired from the same signal live..it's sent from either or both of the valves. So..when the pump runs check to see if the valves are open. If either IS then you need to see which valve it is (CH or HW) and see whether the thermostat that is operating the valve is giving a live for a good reason.
Bear in mind that with the boiler in a garage I would EXPECT you to have a Frost Stat. If so, then it MAY be incorrectly set. This would bypass all the time and temperature controls and 'hot-wire' the pump and boiler.
Lockout.
Is this the burner lockout.. or the overheat thermostat. The button on the burner or the little one tucked away on the control panel somewhere?

If the boiler and pump is firing with no demand for heat it may be one of the zone valves at fault.
Its sounds to me like the micro switch on one of the zone valves is becoming live, which in turns fires up the pump and boiler, but the valve is probably in the close position whilst this happens, meaning there is no where for the heat to go and causing the boiler to overheat and go into lockout.
That is my best guess without actually being there.

Thanks for the input guys. I will see if it happens again but I am pretty sure it will. Today was the 7th visit to this system in the 4 yrs we have lived here!
WRT to the lockout I am pretty sure he said it wasn't the overheat one. The button lights orange and is on the LHS of the boiler workings when the cover is off. I think he said the overheat one was a red light (maybe the one on the front panel?).

I got that impression from the guy who came today; he reckons the capacitor will sort the lockout but almost hinted that he would no doubt be back to look at the other issue separately. I'll see what happens to it next though I'm not about for the next couple of days so will have to rely on the wife to sort it
