fuel gauge stopped working

Took out the dash and no loose wires, next step tank sender??????????? ANY COMMON FAULTS ????

P.S. my mates got a brand new tank sender and fuel pump from a 3500 SDI Rover, did TVR use this one???

Hi Andy

Silly question here but have you tried the fuse that feeds the heater blower,I seem to recall that the fuel guage is fed from the same fuse.Look in the TVR service book for the fuse position,just a thought.

The fuel gauge on mine is fed from the same supply as the other engine instruments. It often depends on who made the wiring loom... My rad fans were wired independantly using the fuse and relay marked as "heated seats" in the owner's manual. That confused me for a while.

Not sure what sender TVR used, but it's easy enough to take out and test with a multimeter.

Andy if you take out the sender (hopefully you do not have a really early car where it is on the side of the tank )the resistance element push fits into 2 berylium copper contacts i found these had splayed & one end was not in contact closed this up & refitted worked fine. I think from memory resistance was 270R take off connector at sender first & measure resistance from this pin to earth as if open circuit gauge usually reads full

Easy way to test. take the carpet off tank by sender, take a photo or write down were the wire go, which colour were. . then disconnect wires & touch wire together when the ignition switched on but not running, The gauge should now show full.
If not its ypur sender. If it stays empty start the search,,, Good luck hunting,,,

I was hopeing for a magic 'wish' to fix it, would you believe i run an auto electrical company, i just cant be bothered when i get home plus the rain we've had, my wifes landcruiser has two bulbs out as well.

(cobblers shoes leak !!!!!!!!)

You may or may not find this useful. When mine packed up I just left it and started keeping a note of the mileage when I filled up. A few months later it just started working again - been fine for years now. You gotta love 'em.

I DID..........filled up every 100 miles, but then !!!!!!!!!!!!!

The reason why I suggested the fuse is that when the car was off the road 2 winters ago, when I got it back on the road again I switched on the heater blower and it made a squeeling noise and stopped I also noticed that the fuel guage had stopped working.I removed the panel in the passenger footwell and checked the fuses one had blown,I replaced it and both the blower and the fuel guage worked again.

Have you checked the fuses then?

No not checked, i dont recall the heater ever working anyway, i'll get round to it someday....

Too busy enjoying driving it (and guessing what a mile is), saying that not been out for weeks due to rain/bad weather

p.s done a few changes to it, mostly more stainless nuts/bolts, service, new oil filler cap, new rear number plate, new std rear lights are in looks a million times better (look at best griff pic forum) new keys, new alarm and immobiliser fobs,new battery cut off keys,new temp rad switch knocks in around 80 degrees now,new water cap etc etc etc

Well I would bet that the fuse has gone then,so easy fix for the fuel guage.Have you fitted the new alloy window channels yet?Looked at the pics of the rear yes does look better with the standard lights thought it would thats why I bought em.

Yes fused with the fan heater motor??? now working again


Got really giddy and did the bulbs on the wifes Landcruiser as well




PS. Craig when did you fit that yuasa battery to the Griff ?????

Just updating for any future searchers - my 92 4.5BV also has the fuel gauge fused with the heater (7th fuse from the right 15A in my case).

I think its great the factory thought of wiring in a way to warn us the fans weren't working
