my ford cvh(carb fed) is 21 years old and has covered 35k miles it routinely puffs a dollop of smoke on start up. its always done in in my ownership, and runs really well and doesnt continue to smoke once its going. i have probably put in a litre of oil over the last 6k miles, so not using an obscene amount. is there a reason that it does this, should i be worried???

Don't worry Sir, they all do that. I think it is only likely to be valve stem oil seals if it is guffing smoke on the overrun.

+1 for stem seals. when replaced i'll wager the ones you take out are as hard as nails, the CVH is notorious for them. Often a good way of haggling the price down on a CVH engined car, 'Ooh, blue smoke mate, engines shot, gotta be worth couple hundred quid off the asking price' wink

Update, no smoke of overrun, does that mean the seals are not too bad yet?

is still seems blueish smoke, so what else could be causing me to be burning oil?
