Anyone suggest which places in whitby are good for eating in, mainly looking for either good fish and chips or a good all round seafood restaurant, been around the place a few times during the day but can anyone recommend based on experience? thanks

if you'd like something a bit different to the usual fish and chips at the sea side check at the pie and mash shop opposite the Mr chippy place.

A range of pies served with mash and peas. Very tasty and a nice little place to eat.

If you're wanting fish and chips then it has to be the Magpie cafe on Pier Road.

There's a nice seafood place on the corner just down from there towards the bridge called The Marine. I highly recommend both the pan fried king prawn and scallop dish, and the roasted sea bass dish.

+1 for this

If you dont mind take away fish and chips, then make your way over the bridge away from the town, and walk along the edge of the harbour and after about a 1/4 of a mile, there is a take away called marina fisheries. I had the best scampi and chips in there i have ever had from a take away, and mrs slopes and her folks had cod. The cod was massive, very tasty(so im told) and not that expensive, shame its out of the town so to speak

Not seafood, but there is a little place on the old part of town opposite the joke shop called the White horse and Griffin IIRC, absolutley wonderful food. Bit pricey though - Last time I went it came to about £80 for two, excluding drinks.

For takeaway Fish & Chips I've always found Quayside just down from the Magpie to be better (Winner of Young Frier of the Year award for 3 years I think). Less of a queue for reputation too!

Cheers,
Tom

And another +1 for Humble Pie! Nice little place with good, simple food.

You can't go wrong with The Magpie but there are better fish and chips to be found in Whitby. Other places I like are The Shambles (when hungry), Harry's Bar (when not that hungry - mini portions) and The Marina. The Hatless Heron used to be good but it's gone downhill and is pretty rubbish these days, I'd avoid that one.

Sunday carvery at The Stables/Cross Butts is top notch but you need to book. And slightly further afield, The Horseshoe in Egton Bridge is pretty good for giant portions and The Ellerby Hotel in Ellerby is also nice.

Cross Butts is very good, the building itself has won awards in recent years.

My and the OH often go to Whitby...

Agree'd with anothe rposter that the Quayside Chippy seems nicer to me than Magpie without the crazy queues!

On a night we go the the indian behind the bus station, Passage To India. Very nice, could use to book on a weekend.

Then to Bar 7 which is next door to the Quayside and upstairs.

Been to the Magpie and had a sitdown - great food. Went to the Magpie takeaway and it was cr*p. Weird!

Last time I went to The Magpie they'd sold out of Haddock when other fish shops hadn't. And frankly I think £4.75 for a battered and fried fish is a fking rip off! Especially when it's a cod. The fishcakes were bloody marvelous though!
