Focus 1.6 Zetez

Recently bought a 1.6 Zetec, is it seriously this slow?

If I'm doing 75 - 80 mph on the mway in 4th gear, I'll pop it in 5th and the revs will drop and I'll find the speed drops off too.

Why is 5th gear so non existant? I find mind self leaving it in 4th but this is no good for my fuel consumption!

The clutch is on it's way out, but if this was the problem surely this would affect all gears?

We've got one and although acceleration is a bit pants the the crusing at 80 to 90mph is fine, the 5th gear seems to be well matched to the torque curve of the engine.

Perhaps the engine has seen better days or as there seems to be a clutch/ gearbox issue perhaps the gearbox has been changed to one with a longer 5th gear ratio, such as a box meant for a diesel.
