Info on upgrades wanted
Discussion
Am i right in thinking that on earlier cars even if it has run faultless since day 1 that the upgrades might not have been done even if it's covered say 35-40k.
I know it's been covered loads of times before but from memory the essntial upgardes are the ECU, from ??? can't remember what the make was to an MBE, is that right also is it easy to see the ecu to doulble check.
Fuel pump wiring is this just a case of tracing the live & earth right back to the ecu and change for a larger wire.
And the fan upgrade did the early cars have only have 1 fan and the upgrade was basically fit 2.
Is there anything else thats an essential upgrade rather than a wolud be an idea to do but can wait.
Cheers chaps for any help

What I do is pull the two existing wires back to the ECU harness, and use them to control a relay. New power line goes from the battery, through a fuse, then to the source side of the relay. Bigger power line continues from the output side of the relay to the fuel pump. Ground terminal on the fuel pump gets grounded to the chassis.Nebby said:

Well it depends what car you are getting the 2.5 or 3 or 3R??I know it's been covered loads of times before but from memory the essntial upgardes are the ECU, from ??? can't remember what the make was to an MBE, is that right also is it easy to see the ecu to doulble check.

3R pretty much has all the essentials sorted out - bar the fuel pump wiring upgrade.
My GT03 did 45k without needing any mods at all, however I did have the 5 speed box reconditioned etc this year and the open diff was very badly worn and would have failed soon.
So the Mods I would recommend is track day sump, lsd and fuel pump wiring... not absolute musts for the road but dont go on track without any of them

Was lsd & track day sump fitted from new on the 3r.
No. Infact some early 3R's were 5spd as well. TDS is an option so wouldn't have been fitted as standard on the 3R.The first 3Rs did not have TDS either and this was an option (one that you had to have if you spec'd an oil pressure/temp gauge).
If you see one with a 5 speed box then it will almost certainly have been supplied with an open Ford diff as the 6 speed was an option. The ATB diff was also an option for the 5 speeder.
ALL GTOs & GTO3s were supplied with 5 speed and open diff unless spec'd differently. I *believe* the ATB became an option around the beginning of 2003 for new cars so anything earlier with one fitted has had the box out.

Would be 2.5 / 3.0 five speed can't stretch to a 3r.
I wonder though once you have done all these essential upgrades what the cost would be compared to just buying a 3R in the first place? If any of the jobs require engine out and you are not doing it yourself I would imagine you would get to the 3k mark quite easily.

I'am starting to see that now so a 3r is more desirable even if at the very least it's got the 3.0l & 6 speed.
Why are some of the 2.5 going for such high money if you then going possibly spend 3-4k, because thats nearly puts it in 3r money territory.Especially if theres ECU upgardes aswell.

Forgive me if I'm wrong but I suspect you've looked at the bhp figures and compared them to the cossie you currently have? If so then go and drive a 2.5 noble 1st and then decide whether you feel you even need more power. Aside from the reliability upgrades/fixes, they are fantastic out of the box in any guise! Why are some of the 2.5 going for such high money if you then going possibly spend 3-4k, because thats nearly puts it in 3r money territory.Especially if theres ECU upgardes aswell.
Sold the Cossy last year, must update my profile
I'm not comparing it to the Cossy in anyway because that had around 320 bhp, and i'm not saying that i need anything more than a 2.5.
Power to weight ratio against the Cossy is completely different as is shape, so although same sort of power 2 very differnt cars.
All i'm stating in my last post is, if certain things need upgrading to the tune of possibly 5k by the time i've spent 22-25k on a 2.5 plus another 5 ( worst case ) a 3r is more desirable.
If the 2.5 were sub 20k then it not so bad but some of them although probably well looked after if they have 40k miles on then spending extra on a 3r is better.

The prices seem to go up and down. During the winter months they seemed to be advertised for similar prices to the ads now. where as a 1 or 2 months ago there were a few 2.5's for around the 20k mark with low mileage. If the 2.5 were sub 20k then it not so bad but some of them although probably well looked after if they have 40k miles on then spending extra on a 3r is better.

Yes I do see your point but what I mean is if you find a 2.5 that has had the diff, ECU and rads replaced then where's the need to spend 5 grand? Its all done, you don't need to spend anything.I'm not comparing it to the Cossy in anyway because that had around 320 bhp, and i'm not saying that i need anything more than a 2.5.
