How Do These People Get Away With It?
Discussion
Have done quite a bit of driving through average speed camera-controlled motorways recently (notably the 50mph M1 and M25 roadworks sections) and I don't understand how some cars can just sail on past me without a care in the world! Unless they have James Bond-style rotating number plates with someone else's reg on, how can they not get done when I'm doing a cruise controlled 55mph and come past at least 10mph faster? This isn't the odd car either, I've seen loads doing it! Anyone else noticed and frustrated by this?
I have it on good faith (some road workers that use these all the time) that only the middle ones Actually work in the speed check area, or in smaller zones like roadworks, the first and last, with all the middle ones being dummy ones.
So if its a small zone and you join after the first camera then in theory you can do what the hell you like through the zone and on bigger ones you can speed untill the middle two then speed back up again.
I am yet to test this one myself yet though, I trust them, but not enough to risk points and fines.

sheesh... I just put it down to plate cloning.
I am surprised, not that it's a terribly bad thing at the number of peope who hit the brakes as soon as the 50 mph limit starts whereas I just cruise down until the first camera.
Got a mate who works as a project manager for a large construction company who told me some scary stats about the number of employees off on sick leave due to stress caused by working on the motorways and the speed of the traffic flashing by their heads on a minute to minute basis, so I am sympathetci. The problem is that I rarely see anybody actually working, or if they are, they're sitting in some jcb.

I totally agree. I stick at about 53-54mph but seem to get overtaken by a large number of people who seem oblivious to the average speed ideal. Some slow down at the cameras then speed up again. Strangely, I don't know anyone who has been done by these motorway cameras.
I aim for 58 on gps satnav. Add that to the over reading of your speedo and that's some difference. Did this for several weeks every day with no probs. Of course the position of the number plate on my Elise may well render it invisible to camera

I've heard of people using larger vehicles to hide their front plate before each camera. Not tried it myself but the logic stands to reason.
I do this, just make sure you are passing a truck etc. I just sit at bang on 50 through them because its not as if a few mph through a couple of miles is going to make much of a difference.I think most people just bank on them not working.
I mostly see trucks ploughing through them, but then they're restricted to 56mph anyway so probably don't get into the zone for prosecution.
How many people do you hear about who've actually got prosecuted through the 'regular' average speed cameras on the M1/M25?
Personally however, I set the cruise control to 50 and don't take the risk.

...and I notice the Gatso trays all ready on the overhead gantries on the M1 (same strip'ish) - anyone any idea when these are going to be filled with their dastardly denizens?
When they get some funding.... which the government has just Cancelled
...not the lovely new gantries, after the lovely roadworks that has sped the whole Luton part up wonderfully. White lines with no Gatso (or a Gatso facing the wrong way, if we're talking normal roads), ain't an issue. I figured (worried) that the funding for the roadworks and steel fabrication for the gantries would've extended to funds allocated to the Gatso people, and that it was only a matter of time. I hope the cancelled funding thought bears out.

My boss commutes from MK to Leeds around 3 times a week and was that fed up of the Nottingham M1 average cameras that he simply 'risked' the 3 points to find out if he got done... he didn't, and therefore took no notice of them from then onwards...
With this tactic - wouldn't it be the case that if he was overstepping whatever the actual threshold was, and indeed getting caught each time - if it was a daily commute, would he not by the time he found out, have so many NIPs to his name on the doormat that he's lost his licence over three+ journies?Maybe there's some sort of average speed GPS device that calculates it for you. I mean, you could blow past the first one at 240mph, the device calculates the speed you need to be doing 25%, 50% and 75% towards the next one. As long as you're doing 50mph on average, you're driving safely, is the message, presumably?
Or if they still require you to be doing 50mph through it, you slow down to 50 for the first one, accelerate to 240mph, then it figures out what you need to do as you approach the next camera.

What if, right?
What if he only did it once and then waited to see?
Rocket Science 101

Yes - but then he'd have to wait apparently up to a year before being certain there's nothing in the post.
And anyway, if by reference to rocket science you allude to simplicity - you'd be totally correct. There are few forms of propulsion as simple and as free of moving parts as a rocket engine: Tank of oxygen, tank of hydrogen, juxtapose, feed output down to a nozzle - open taps!
