First of all obviously ditch the floormats if you have any. You need to destroy the odour by using a chemical cleaning solution that attacks the bacteria and breaks it down. Stuff like febreeze and all that muck will mask it over for a day and then make it worse. Try cleanyourcar.co.uk or autobrite direct they may have something industrial strength to sort it out.

EDIT. Just found this . Hope it helps.

Probably some juices leaked out the knickers bag...First shampoo the carpet the fish sat on. Then leave some baking soda in a bowel in the car overnight, this will absorb the smell.

I've heard charcoal will absorb nasty smells.

^^ It may cause severe flatulence though.

A couple of Neutradols may be a first port of call to absorb some of the fishiness

You'll never get rid of it.

When I was younger I went on a back packing trip to Bolivia, and my rucksack ended up loaded up into the hold of a Coach for an 8 hour journey along with about 3 tonnes of fish.

Aside from the fact that I had to spend another 6 weeks wandering around the country smelling like Liza Minnelli's undercrackers, I've washed that bloody thing 50 times, and ten years later it still stinks of fish

ETA - And there's nothing worse than a bag that smells of fish (sorry, had to be done)

It was a 140 quid Lowe Alpine job! I'm not throwing it away! hehe

Anyway, it's not like I go hiking anymore, it lives in my parents attic

Have you checked under the seat? Perhaps something fell out of the bag.

Hi,
You could clean the area with a solution of biological washing detergent. It should
break down any enzymes and leave to car smelling a lot better.

Would be so funny if that was the case but it is entirely possible.

I've done a similar thing before involving a Chinese takeaway but that soon cleared.
You left in a Chinese takeaway so it stank for 3 days? That's a bit mean.

Leave an open container of baking soda when you are parked. It will hep to absorb the smell.

MAny years ago i had a one week old 540i, leather interior. I was going fishing way in in Northern. Empty roads up there . I stopped at the local grocery store to buy some beer. (this is a moment of colossal stupidity). I put the beer on the back seat. Was running wuiter hard and spotted a speed trap in the distance. Braked hard, beer launches a couple of bottles which shot between front seats and exploded on the dash.

Worse was to come. Went fishing that night and the only success was the ten year old son of my mate, who caught a 12lb salmon. H e insisted on bringing the fish in the car but dropped it on the way back so it was slithering around on my new leather back seats. I decided not to shoer the morning I drove back and returned with the reeking car to the dealer.. and surprisingly , he got all the smell out.

Needless to say, I never left anything loose on the back seat again.
