How do I get my iphone o play through my car stereo?

I have an ipod conenctor, though it doesn't seem to be compatible with an iphone. I don't want to play my itunes collection anyway. I want to play the sound of my radio app and spotify.
I bought one of those FM transmitters, but with london's airwaves being packed to 0.5 of a Hz in the entire band the clarity is just ste and not workable in a moving vehicle.

Any suggestions/gadgets I can consider?

yes. it has an ipod connector but it does not seem to work with the iphone and I can't be bothered syncing the ipod every time. Also being a member of spotify i tend to just download other people's playlists and listen to those. So would be great to find a way to play spotify and iphone radio through the car stereo in decent quality.
