Anyone have problems with high battery discharge? My wife's X5 is always shutting down so you can't even listen to the radio without the engine on. BMW's response - she doesn't drive it far enough. Wouldn't mind so much if I hadn't paid extra for an (outdated, analogue) TV receiver which is now effectively functionless.

All usual routes of enquiry followed - bottom line is - electrics draw too much power unless the car is driven on long journeys constantly. I know of at least one other car with similar problems, again without any solution being offered by the Ultimate Driving Machine purveyors.

It might be worth replacing the FSR, as that can cause a power drain.

Nat H - what is the FSR?

My X5 (E70, 4.8iSE, 2007) had a high rate of battery discharge - took it into local dealers (that's another painful story) and they updated the software and seemingly fitted a new battery under warranty. Left in airport car park for 3 weeks and it thankfully started, albeit with the battery warning light on. Have used a CTEK charger to top the battery up last weekend (left on overnight and showing fully charged) and despite using it 4 out of 5 days this week the warning light came on and high rate of battery discharge cited again… Looks like another visit to the dealers - oh joy of joys.

FSR is the final stage resistor, which is "known issue" on the E53 X5.

If you have a look on www.xoutpost.xom there are some threads about the battery discharge problem.

The FSR Final Stage Resistor will cause a continuous battery drain and it is commonly known as the "hedgehog". When you see it you will know why. Try sitting in the car, locking it and waiting 10 mins and see if the interior fan sounds like it is idling, thats a sure fire diagnosis. The car does not go into full sleep mode, discharging the battery. Mind you, if the battery is over 4 years old it could be that too.

If your cigggy lighter is always live, a big solar charger might be a short term fix - http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?ModuleNo=99760...
