The 204hp 2.0 litre diesel engine
Discussion
Currently the 123d has the above engine available and by all accounts it is a great engine.
Why haven't BMW put it into say the 3 series coupe, the 5 series or the new X3.
The 325d coupe has the same hp but worse fuel economy. Is it a case of people preferring the 2.5litre V6?
I would have thought the more powerful 2.0 litre diesel would have been well received in other models.

Good point.
When the 123d came out, I was expecting it to follow in other models.
It really is a great engine, not sure why it hasn't happened yet.
Maybe it only suits the smaller car?
Maybe too many warranty claims on the 123d, so avoided extending the problem?
Maybe someone will come along with a bit of inside info.

The 325d is a 3.0d straight six with a smaller turbo than the 330d.Why haven't BMW put it into say the 3 series coupe, the 5 series or the new X3.

May find the x23d in any news 3 series shape?
I am sure the 123d engine would be very popular, but when i was buying my 3 series coupe nothing but a six cylinder would do, even if it was the 325d. I guess for some the economy of the four cyclinder engine would be more important, but the 325d is very smooth, torquey and sounds pretty good for a diesel. I'd have preferred the 330d, but it was too much of a step up in ££. The 325d was a good compromise.
The 120d coupe has 177hp and a 0-62 time of 7.6s
The 123d coupe has 204hp and a 0-62 time of 7.0s
The 320d coupe has 184hp and a 0-62 time of 7.5s
So if the 3 series coupe was fitted with the x23d engine, it would have 204hp and a 0-62 time of circa 7.1s
The 325d coupe has 204hp and a 0-62 time of 6.9s.
I accept the smoothness of V6 would be nice but as the x23d has the same hp and probably only a marginally slower 0-62 time, I can't understand why the engine isn't being used more widely. Given that all car makers need to increase fuel efficiency across the range, there must be another reason why the x23d isn't more widely available.
Maybe there is a warranty issue, I don't know but I do think if there was a problem with the engine it would be corrected or simply dropped from the lineup.
It seems a real shame the x23d is only used in 1 version of 1 model.

Sorry, straight 6.
Regardless of it being straight or V, I'm sure it is a great engine and for those who don't worry too much about fuel economy, it sounds like a good choice.
However, the x23d sounds a cracking lump but it just isn't being used in enough cars.
Shame really.
My 330D Touring (2009 model) is averaging 45mpg, fantastic economy and loads of torque Regardless of it being straight or V, I'm sure it is a great engine and for those who don't worry too much about fuel economy, it sounds like a good choice.

I don't think there are any issues with the 123d engine .... I got told they just wanted the 3 series to be perceived as a higher level product so put the 3.0L in the 325d and didn't offer a 323d.
Having driven both the 123d and 325d ... + now got a 320d I can only say all of them are superb !
The 123 feels like a more lag free linear 120d but with more top end bite whereas the 325d feels IMO quicker than the figures suggest. I have driven loads of 530d's and a 325d feels far quicker at 'normal' speeds.
All engines are quiet ... the 325d is louder but in a more pleasing way - if you can say that with a diesel ...

There's no significant issues with the 123d engine that would put them off putting the engine in other models, as has been said before it's simply a prestige thing, in that 6 cylinder cars are more desirable so they can charge more for a 6 cylinder 325d than they could for a 323d with a 4 pot engine.
They wouldnt have both in the range because the performance would be too similar and the 4 pot would probably steal sales from the 325, the only way they could do it really is put a 323d engine in above the 320d, then make the 325, 330 and 335 more powerful so there's still performance distinction between each model

Apparently the 325d is a much bigger seller in the rest of europe than it is here as the europeans prefer the 6 cyl engine to the 320d four pot that is favoured here. They dont want to risk losing sales by changing it to a 4 pot.Gassing Station | BMW General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
