Which one of the cars are you looking at?

Why do you not want to pay the dealers asking price?

My second question is an absolutely serious one, by the way. If you intend to ask for a discount go in armed, any salesman worth his salt will push through 'I would like a discount please' in no time at all.

Know the market
Know the spec
Know the options
Know the dealers package
Know the competition

If you're looking at an in-demand model in a popular colour with a good spec, sensible mileage, fair package regards warranty and aftercare that is already at a competitive price then you can fully expect to pay asking price.

If however there are a choice on the market of comparable examples and the obvious differentiator is price then by all means ask for a discount.

If you go in VERY well armed you are putting yourself in a position to make a decision immediately. In salesman terms, that is gold. If at any point he thinks you are still 'just shopping' then he/she will not spend the time narrowing down price on a deal you have made it impossible for him to close.

Opps sorry the link didn't work, can't seem to isolate the car on it's own. Looking at the Black Cooper S @ £11950.

OK, you have three really nice options on that car, pan roof, slippy diff and Recaros. The Recaros are hideously rare on a mini, in fact, there is only one comparable car (roof and Recaros) that is up privately with a few more miles for 500 quid less. You can take that car out of the equation as it has no warranty at all.

In the mini marketplace, how desirable are those options and how much is the main dealer warranty worth? You've got to remember that not only are they USPs to the dealer now they're also USPs to you and your residual values down the line.

It is only a few quid more expensive than cars with fewer toys (ignoring private ads). Personal opinion? You're doing well to get even a sniff off, the car is competitively priced, it is a good colour and in a nice 'enthusiast' sort of a spec. The dealer has it positioned very well.

Of course this does all assume that the car is nice, properly historied and properly prepared smile

Thanks for the advice Dr G. It is a very good spec and pretty much exactly what we are looking for, the only thing missing is a MFSW. This is not a major thing just nice for long journeys. Can't actually see why it wasn't speced when new since they ticked alot of other boxes on the extras.
Might just start with a cheeky offer if I can't find anything liked curbed wheels or the odd scratch to sort out.

Piece of advice:

A car is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it (obvious I know)

Too many times I have seen people miss out on their dream car for a few quid.

Haggle them down until they won'y budge, then make a decision.

My advice - if you don't think anything better will come along for the money - buy it. If you think it will, be prepared for the fact it might not. Then reconsider.

Test driven and bought. Got £700 of price, stripes taken off and renewed in orange, front wheels re-furbed, stones chips and a couple of scratches sorted.
I think I got a good deal, happy bunny and can't wait till next Saturday nowsmile
