Hey folks, I have a 1995 1.8 cabriolet, today driving home, I turned onto a side street and as I put my foot down, I heard a pop and the engine died. Everything else is still working, engine turns over but no start! I had to leave the car and walk home. I guess its electrical, but I dont know where to start testing, so if anyone can point me in the right direction so I have an idea where to start when I pull it home in the morning that would be very helpful. I will check all the small fuses, but there are several box above the fuse box (relays?) and tucked up right behind that lot in all the loom are some inline fuses in blue sleeves. I have to say, when I heard the pop I thought I might have just run over something, I did not notice it coming from down by my right knee, I dont know if there are any sensors that I need to check too. Please help!!
If I can fix the thing, I have just recieved a new hood for it, I cant find any sort of 'how to' for a mk3 hood, so I will photo all the steps and hopefully will be able to post a step by step. I have seen so many posts asking for this, and if I manage to change it, anyone can!

I don't know if your vehicle has one but it sounds as though a collision inertia switch has tripped and killed the fuel pump. Fords used to have them either in the boot or passenger footwell and hitting a big pothole sometimes tripped them. If there is one you just press a button and it resets.

If not then it could be anything.

Thanks, will have a look for that but dont think there is one.
update............
Got the car back and no spark, Think the fuel pump is ok, but plugs were not wet, but fluke meter says that side of things is still working. The coil has burnt thrugh the outer case, and melted some of it, as well as a crack through the palstic and metal housing, so got to find a new one this morning. I just have a horrible feeling that it cant be that easy. Does anyone know if there is any protection for the coil, or anything wired inline with it, that might have gone pop with the coil?

Thanks Adam

Sorted, new coil = motor a go go! can anyone tell should I be worried?, I know these ADZ engines are prone to coil problems, but it let go in quite a big way, should I be checking anything else, or can I just truck on happily and forget about it now

Thanks Adam

If the windings break down inside they can go with a pop. Never heard one myself but know it can happen.
Can't think of anything that would promote it apart from the possibility the case corroded through allowing the innards to short to the bracket. I think they may also be oil filled in which case if the oil had drained due to the corroded case that could have been the start of things.
