I am likely to be going to the Nurburgring in September. I've got 7 days to fill with the wife. The track is not open every day, and mostly just evenings when it is. So, what other sorts of things are there to do in the area, not car related, to make it a good weeks holiday?

We've been to Cologne before so probably won't bother going there again. Would we be better having a couple of days near to the 'ring then moving on somewhere else?

Cochem is nice, very picturesque. About 25km from Nurburg and plenty of hotels, restaurants, shopping for the missus.

Boat trip on the Mosel is always a winner.

+1 Superb scenic bit of the Mosel valley, we found a superb bakery/coffee place with awesome Strudel just up on of the side streets.

Old town in Koblenz is also good in the evenings. Plenty of decent eateries

That would not fall into the category of "wife friendly" I don't think! But then again, if you don't ask...

There's another and MUCH better castle not too far away - went there last year - Berg Eltz - well worth a trip

Also Monschau is a lovely place, but may be better to do on the way back as it's a couple of hours from the 'ring
