Bonnet/hood hydrolics
Discussion
Car is a North American 86 280i. Hood/bonnet won't stay up. Can anyone supply the specs so that I can a replacement. I live out in the "hinterland" of British Columbia and our small town parts people can't determine what it is. The company that sold TVR's is gone so I have nobody in the province who I can follow up with.
Thanks
Jim

RS components (and other companies) do adjustable pressure struts. I'll do a search now for you.
Something like this.................

You should find the 'range' you need marked on your strut.

If they are Range Rover Struts they will be part no. RTC2486 but I'm not sure they are. Being a TVR mine is slightly different from 'standard' and they would not have fitted mine, the standard length did not match my car.
I contacted these people and they sorted me out some that fitted for about £40 a pair delivered. Might be worth an Email to see if they post across the pond and prices.

Next stupid question...if the thingies are from an early Range Rover, what vintage are we talking about. They would definitely be traceable through a dealer in Vancouver.
Had my struts replaced not too long ago, you should be able to get them from an auto supply shop. Have you got an old one to take with you to compare length etc? Don't think you would have to go through Rover necessarily. I didn't.pjtvr390se said:

It'd have to be very early, mid-70s Rangey. The later models had a more substantial tailgate so the rams are more like 210N. It's only a rumour anyway as far as I know, nobody's certain they are Range Rover. It's not impossible that they were made specially for TVR but would be unlikely... so you're looking for a fairly lightweight 70's donor panel, probably a tailgate rather than a bonnet as gas rams on bonnets weren't common till at least the late 80s.I contacted these people and they sorted me out some that fitted for about £40 a pair delivered. IIRC the Imp had a glass tailgate and as that's where the bootlid hinges were lifted from, who knows...
the part is made by STANDARD. I have examined it with a magnifier and can find no part number, at least not visible to my eyes. The end of the fitting part has the maker name on the front and the nbr 7 and FX on the back side where the ball fits in.
PS I did check with SG and it looks like the postage would be more than the part. It's a shame that I didn't follow this up when I was Tyne side in early July. Would have save a great degree of hastle and money as well.

Hmmm, yes I think I now recall those telescopic metal finger-trappers...
So... how about Mk 1 Fiesta tailgate, that can't have been very substantial...

Just to confirm the struts are not Range Rover, I 'borrowed one' to check this out and they are three inches too short and rated at 300n.
Late Range Rover certainly; but from memory the early one had a split tailgate with just a piece of glass (like a Tasmin FHC); that wouldn't have needed 600N to lift it.A few years back I got some struts from a Rangey breakers on the A38 near Derby just to try; paid £4 each only to find they are 225N (but the right length). Never mind, I'll find a use for them one day
