What is the best (cheapest) way to get across - Ferry or Chunnel?

Also, does one need to book in advance? if so, how far?

Cheers

Dover to Dunkirk on Norfolk line is normaly pretty cheap. Good boats on that route too.

Would also prefer to leave from the south east - Dover only?
