What are the differences between the two cars besides the 40 bhp horsepower difference.

How do they differ in terms of real driving?

I'm asking because they seem to be pretty similar and I believe their engine sizes are the same.

Yes they are, but drive a 320d then a 318d, and you will REALLY notice that extra 40bhp-318d exists for tax reasons, if you can afford it, the 320 is the one.
