I had a conversation recently with a group of Pistonhead guys and girls and the subject came round to "when did you total your first car" the stories came out of this incident and that accident. I was quite out of the conversation having never totaled a car, I have had a couple of small accidents but nothing serious.

Anyone else not totaled a car? Considering I have been driving for 20+ years, maybe im not trying hard enough hehe

Never totalled a car as such. The brakes failed on a car I was road-testing a few years back that sent it crashing through a garden fence, but I've yet to write a car off completely.

Nope, never totalled a car. Sum total of my vehicular damage in the last 15 years is a dented wing and door, both on my mother's car and both due to over exuberant youthful driving hehe

Wish I could say I've never totaled a car. Unfortunately I have, 2 months ago, 4 days after buying it!

I've never totaled one.

been sat in the driving seat of two that were totaled by the t**ts that drove into the back of me!

No 1. was on the M25 when some old fool wasn't paying attention when the traffic cascaded to a halt

No 2. was at the end of a slip road off the M27 when someone was looking over his shoulder at the traffic we were joining and missed the fact that I was in front of him unable to join the road

Two 'l' in totalled. Unless you're American.

I've never totalled a car either, had a few attempts, but never managed it.

19 years driving. I have yet to total a car, or indeed bend one while doing more than 3mph, but there's still time.

Were they happy to admit they've totalled a car or two ?

I talk to a lot of Americans due to my job and tend to switch my spelling appropriatly, sometime my vernacular is not always appropriate for all occasions.

Happened to my dad. Audi A4 rear ended by a Ford Fiesta doing 50mph on a motorway, outside line

Its not something to be happy about but if it happened then why not tell the story

Me too.

I once cut up an Innocenti Mini Cooper 1300 with an angle grinder and took it to the local tip in the back of a Fiesta.

Makes me weep when I think about it.

Never totalled one yet

In introduced my front Cavalier bumper to a focus rear quarter in some ice (their damage £2.7k, mine £0)

And I was shunted in the side by a dozy driver overtaking a slowing car on a dual carriage way without realising I was already overtaking her - I'd already seen the car and was doing something about it (their damage, write off (!) mine £10 for an ebay wing mirror)

thinking about it, that cavalier was pretty damn tough.

Can we define "totalled" though? My wife's celica was written off running into the back of someone at 20 - most old cars are written off if you need to replace any more than a headlight.

I think totalled should mean either:

- you have to look twice to work out what car it is
- the car is at least 10% shorter than when you set off
- the wheels weren't on the ground
- ideally a ditch, tree or wild animal should be involved

I rolled my Mum's Fiat Punto while taking her to work one morning not that long after passing my test - a CD I'd just bought slid across the dashboard and fell into the driver's footwell, so I bent down to pick it up while going round a corner at about 10mph, then forgot to straighten the wheel as I sat up. Bumped up the kerb, then a small concrete post, then a tree, all in quick succession, which just rolled the car over.

I also span my own 1.6 Focus out while on the way to karting a year later - wasn't a massive amount of damage, but more than enough to write off a 1k car.

Have just got my first year of no claims bonus after 3 and a half years of driving.

A mate of mine rolled us into a field in his Escort Mk1 1300L (lovely metallic brown, vinyl roof) in about 1985. It was totalled, we were fine.

I lost control of my GF's Minor on a long curve leading to a roundabout (one of those high ones with the chevrons) I hit it side on and the poor Moggie was only useful for driving in clockwise circles.

Totalled my Honda Civic 12 years ago. Lost control on a bend and went through a fence. Spent a further 2 years paying off the finance!

Only person hurt was me thank goodness. Big lesson learnt - drive like a saint now, no bumps or points since.
