No? Then why aren't they bothered about selling cars?

I'm looking for 3 new cars. Went to Volvo (I know) and got blanked in the sales room. Went up to someone who then walked in to a back room as we approached. After leaving, we phoned to ask about the cars and were told we'd receive a call back when the sales woman was off the phone. Never got called back.

Moved to BMW. Same treatment. Phoned up and was once again told to expect a call back and never received one, even after double checking they knew i was after 3 cars.

Went over to Jaguar, a company that our family have had cars from before and normally get amazing customer service. 4 people within 10 minutes asked if we needed any help. Finally got somewhere but due to prior commitments, had to leave. Returned a week later only to be ignored once again. One of the salesmen did nod his head, obviously recognising us, but didn't offer any assistance. There was also a receptionist in the show room who as we were leaving, said to one of the guys watching a TV in the salesroom "Does one of you want to assist this gentleman, (Not me) He needs a new battery for his key fob."

All 3 times, there were at least 4 salesmen present who were not serving people.

So now we're off to Lexus. Who we normally get good service from. But seriously, is it me? I haven't even been acknowledged by anyone, so i can't have upset anyone. yet. So why aren't they bothered about selling cars?

Maybe leave the mankini at home next time?

But really, in my limited experience of car sales, i've found most of them make you feel unwanted, not calling back etc
Or worse, lie to you because they think your an idiot!

But i like the mankini biggrin

I just can't believe it. I'd be out of a job if i treated anyone like that, but they get away with it.

I've often thought this. So much so I still haven't ruled out getting into the business myself, because whilst I'm not the most knowledgeable person about car mechanics I'd bet I'd be able to shift them faster than 99% of these salespeople, and give a good customer experience to boot. Last time I went to a garage was to check out a second hand car. When I arrived at the specified time the bloke had taken the day off (he didn't bother to let me know before hand) and his dad was standing in for him. His dad was about 104 and hadn't been told any info and didn't know anything about the car (he wasn't much on security either, he just handed me the keys when I said I wanted a test drive). When I asked to see the documents he didn't know where they were. The car looked like it hadn't been washed for 6 months - obviously the spotless photos in the ad were not recent.

I'd never buy trade now, always private (and not new unless I won the Lottery)

I'm only buying new as they will be company cars, hence wanting 3. I seem to get amazing service and prices from private sellers or smaller garages. Big chains of them never seem to be bothered.

seriously why not?

complain about not being seen too at a dealership then leave to a "prior" commitment when you are getting assistance. how does that look to the salesman?

Exactly, they seemed to give you good service, did you not take someones name and go back to see them directly. I'm getting tired of reading threads like this about car salesman not wanting to sell cars, if you want a car go and tell them you're ready to do business, don't wait for them to come and kiss you arse.

John.

I dont like pressure salesmen and dont like being pestered. Half the time sales staff are clueless about what they are selling anyway.
I bought new on the internet anyway, saved a fortune over best dealer prices.
drive the deal are good, but it depends what car your after.

Whoa, chill guys. I did try to go up to them. Like i said, i made calls and when i went up to someone, they walked away. I'm not expecting to be jumped on as i walk in, but it would be nice to be able to talk to someone when you want to.

Or maybe, "...did the salesman not give you his card and ask you to contact him directly, or arrange a conveninent time to return?" A salesman's job is to sell, not to wait in a corner and only speak when spoken to.

"Student/Recruitment Consultant" seeks to buy 3 company cars and doesn't phone ahead to make an appointment.

Agreed; I know for a fact if I was a Car sales person, I'd be THE most successful sales person in there based on the types of people I have come across in them.

You have to make an appointment to buy stuff? Bugger. Wouldn't know the telephone number of my local supermarket would you?

What a daft notion.

So you go into a dealer and expect them all to immediately fall at your feet, kiss your arse for an hour, and then call you back every day for 6 months with things you don't want, need or like?

Now I know that's typically a recruitment consultants sales technique, but guess what.......it doesn't work!

Similar story to what happened to me at a Skoda dealer at the weekend, bar the one keen young chap who was very enthusiastic, plied me with drinks and brochures etc. They didn't have the car I wanted, so he took my details to call me back. I voiced my experience of this with other dealers, where I don't think I have EVER got a call back. He promised that wouldn't happen this time.

I'd got 2 miles down the road when he phoned back. "We have the car you're looking for at another dealer nearby. It's on its way to us now."

So we went back, and yes, the other four salesmen were in some sort of break room, watching telly, and two appeared to be playing that game where you stick a famous person's name on a post-it note to your forehead then try to guess who it is. Our young chap knew what he was talking about, demonstrated everything on the car, let us take it for a spirited test drive, and 4 hours after we originally turned up "for a look" I walked out having paid a deposit on the car.

The whole time we were there it was only him and the "weekend sales manager" who served any customers, you can just tell that the lazy sods in the office had no interest in me as I wasn't going to buy an expensive new car.

+1, you go into the Jag dealers, they give you the attention you crave, then you make some excuse and leave without committing to anything.....um, I wonder why they didn't all leap off their seats when you next visited?

scratchchin I now have this scenario in my head:

BOSS: Right Mr OP, you are just coming up to the end of your course and we have taken you on as a Recruitment Consultant. First task, get us 3 company cars please! Here is £100k, get what you like.

OP: Right, I need some company cars - I'll go for 3 Volvos... Oh wait, poor service. I know, 3 Jags please. Oh wait.. Is there a Bentley dealers near here?
