STi Shifter replacements

I have Black 9 speed triple 105 shifters, they are ST-5510-L

I want to replace them as they are a bit worse for wear after a few off's, they are now out of date and not seemingly stocked anywhere on the net.

Anyone know what my options are? I don't see anything else that will work without some other type of changes i.e move to a newer 10spd group.

Current models of Tiagra are 9 speed.

If you can't get 9 speed 105 shifters (though I'm sure you still can if you look around further) you can use 10 speed shifters. I put a bike together a couple of years ago with the remnants of a 9 speed 105 group set but added 10 speed 105 shifters in case I wanted to upgrade to 10 speed later.

Chian Reaction Cyles do 9 speed Tiaga shifters £139.99 the pair. They also do the older 105 and Ultegra 10 speed STIs from and the newer 105 ones (cables routed under the bar tape) for £150-170. It would seem that upgading to 10 speed levers is pretty cost effective.

Can't see myself downgrading to tiagra, even though they've probably surpassed my old 105's. There are these 6510's ultegra 9 speed's

But at over £200 I might as well bite the bullet and go the full 105 10 spd groupset route for about £400, I was hoping that the shifters being old would still be stocked and be quite cheap (£100-£150), but alas it always seems so.

Not sure on 10 speed compatibility but would happily stick some 105 10's on if they'll work.

£206 is a lot of money for 9 speed ultegras when 10 speed Ultegra are £170 the pair.

You mention 'going the 10 speed route for about £400'. What is the £400 for?

The £400 would cover the cost of a full groupset change to a 10 speed 105 triple. I need a triple, it's reasonably hilly where I live and i'm a)fat b)unfit and c)tall so that all added together means some wide ratio's.

Ok I could possibly subtract a some components from a full groupset, but I think buying individual components to get it up to 10 spd would cost more.

I'd have thought you should be able to set up the 10-speed shifters on a 9-speed block with a bit of care thinking about the spare click.

I just see this ending in tears, hit a down hill stretch drop down to 10th sprocket and bang at 35+mph, I even have a flightdeck and can see the cogs I've selected but just know this would happen at some point.

Your should be able to set the limit screws on the rear mech so irrespective of how many clicks you have it won't leap off the sprockets. If you set it so the 9th click sets the right tension for the final sprocket and the 10th click just releases a bit more cable but the mech is already at the limit stop you shouldn't have any problem.

For those old enough to remember, I had the opposite problem with the old Deore XT thumbshifters and still use the extra "ghost" click for it to work on my upgraded sprockets on the MTB.

The extra click doesn't do anything if you have the tension right and the limits set as ewenm says. I'm my case I stuck the 10 speed levers on the 9 speed set up and it worked perfectly fist time with no adjusting. An extra click doesn't actually happen - there is not enough movement left in the set up to effect a click on the levers after the lowest gear is reached. In fact the smoothness of changes on this bike really surpasses that on my other bikes, including one with a full 10 speed DuraAce gruppo.

Thanks guys, that clears it up, obviously I stupidily forgot that the full range of movement in the deraileur and the width of the rear cassette is the same it's just the increments and end stops that need fiddling.
