Friend of mine owns a flat in Edinburgh, rents it out to some students (his daughter lives there too).

Had one girl round, seemed really nice, got on with the two girls already in the flat. Asked all the right questions etc.

Signed a 1 year lease, paid 6 months in advance (£3k) with a bankers draft in her name.

3 days later, girl shows up and apologises, saying that her mother has died and wonders if she can have £2k back to pay for funeral and she'll be able to pay it again in a few weeks.

Mates daughter phones him up, tells him what happened and they feel sorry for her so give her the £2k in cash.

Bank draft then gets reversed (within 7 days) and he's out of pocket £2k.

Bank can't help, apparently it can be traced to a bank in Lagos but no further.

I didn't know there was a 7 day period in which you can reverse a bank draft! Neither did my mate, or his daughter!

Good scam though. s.

That is why I was very very sceptical about letting my car go via payment of a bankers draft. Lesson is always be at the drawing bank and have it verified by the agent there before taking it to your bank.

Come to think of it, probably should have drafted the £2k back again for the same avoidance measures.

Anyway, I must admit, I laughed when he told me. I honestly thought that a draft was as good as cash.

Especially as he was clearly trying to do a good deed, and will probably think twice next time.

Wise movesmile

If the draft is from a UK clearing bank, you can phone them and check its real. If its a Nigerian bank, it can take two months to clear/bounce.

my dad had a Nigerian send him a cheque for £15k for a 10k car, the usual "you send me the car and profit", the loyds tsb logo had been drawn with crayon and rubbed off, went to police and the "police staff" behind the counter said "oh it looks genuine to me, just cash it and send them the goods, it has their bank details on so they can be traced if it bounces, if you dont send them the goods they might start legal proceedings against you!

W.T.F.???

so went to loyds tsb who were far more interested, never heard anything back from the guy about the car, or his 5k profit!!!

But this one is a new one, and sounds stty, defiantly need a passport and proof of ID for people!!!

They were showing how to detect them on Fake Britain BBC1 tonight.
