there are some nice hotels but I don't know what they are.

betty's cafe is a popular tourist spot but I don't rate it that much. The cakes etc. look nice though I've never been that impressed with them. Perhaps I just choose the wrong ones. There is a place called cafe concerto that I quite like the cakes at though - good for lunch but a bit pricey (near the minster)

There is a restaurant at the top of Micklegate/end of blossom street called delrios that I think is very good - italian. There are the usual chain zizzis/ask/pizza express etc. in the centre.

A walk round the walls is good. Have a look at the abbey ruins in the museum gardens. Go inside the minster. The crypt of the minster (undercroft?) and also the trip up the tower if it's a clear day are good too.

Wander round the nice shopping streets around the minster.

The national railway museum is worth a couple of hours.

oh: nice (by reputation) restaurants...

Melton's (n scarcroft road - a bit out of town). There is also a bistro run by the same people walmgate - just down the road from a loch fyne fisheries restaurant (chain but quite good generally). On the same road there are a couple of good places for steak etc. at the top, and just by the bridge there is the blue bicycle - never been but supposedly good. Across the road from walmgate there is also a nice italian just on the shambles (which you might want to battle down anyway as its a touristy spot).

Can't go to York without visiting the Jorvik Viking Centre... absolutely brilliant attractions.

Hotel wise, I've not been for a little while, but always used to stay in the Royal York which is close to the station and nice enough.

If you don't mind a bit of a drive out of the centre of York then the Yorkshire Air museum http://www.yorkshireairmuseum.co.uk/ is worth going to. As another chap mentioned the railway museum is good. Entry is free but be aware the car park if you opt to use it costs a fair bit!

Plenty of nice places to eat/drink. Bettys tea room is always popular http://www.bettys.co.uk/

If the weather is good you can hire a boat and cruise down the Ouse as well.

Make sure you walk around the city wall - very nice way to see parts of the city.

HTH.
