Rattle

I have had a rasping sound from the front of the engine for a couple of weeks now, sounds almost like an exhaust blow but also sounds a bit metalic, there are know blows atall in the exhaust, I have also removed the belt connecting everything at the front, and run for very short space of time (under dealer advise) but the noise was still there. It completeley dissapears when hot. Any ideas appreciated, as i'm stumped at the moment.
