Just reading a story in the independent regarding a survey that suggested 54%(or some-such number) of people asked admitted to either eating or drinking a soft drink whilst driving, they didn't specifically say this was wrong/dangerous but went on to list other things people admitted to doing such as talking on a mobile without handsfree, putting on makeup and getting dressed(!)

Now my point is I really don't see that eating or drinking while driving is in any way risky, obviously i'm not suggesting you should be chomping on a roast dinner while in the outside lane of the M40... but come on, who hasn't eaten a chocolate bar or bag of crisps in the car? I certainly do all the time. Is this the next mobile-phone-type driving taboo to be banned?

Sandwich, pack of crisps, bottle of coke.

I've heard you can get done but only heard of some person getting done for drinking water at a traffic light on a hot day by some nutter BiB.

On a long distance trip, I would usually have a drink of variety on the way, but I wouldn't eat much more than a chocolate bar whilst driving. Anything more and I'd stop somewhere

Early morning starts and a coffee with a cereal bar of some description is almost a given.

Big mac and fries. (regular size mind, as the go large drink wont fit in the cup holder otherwise....)

Seriously though, a bottle of water and a choclate bar is just about manageable I reckon

Agree with you, i do regular 500 mile plus journeys and i eat and drink on the move as i like to push on. On the other side of the coin when i'm knackered (i usually drive over night) i stop at a services and get my head down for a bit, the thing that grips me is the 2hr rule.......been caught out with it and it cost me a fair wedge......i buy your expensive petrol and coffee yet you see fit to limit my time ! If i purchase from you then exempt me should be the rule surely.

I drink all the time (non-alcoholic of course!!).

I occasionally eat a maccy d's whilst driving when on the go and in a huge rush. I do know that it's not the best of ideas.

Cereal bar/fruit etc no problems eating that in the car!

Cheers

I some times have a bag of sweets open, but nothing complicated. Has to be something without a wrapper, and if the bag is not open before I'm driving it stays closed.

I usually have a bottle of water with me in warm weather. I have eaten all kinds of food while on the move, chocolate bars, crisps, apples, sandwiches...

If it's in order for plod to engage in pursuits through housing estates with one hand on his radio mike...

It's in order for me to munch a sandwich...

I'm waiting to get pulled. If I do, I have a collection of video clips for the court, depicting plod holding his mike at speed, including the Impreza pilot with NO hands on the wheel.

If the court deems my conduct unsafe, things will have to change for plod.

What i don't understand is how it is still acceptable / within the law for people to smoke whilst driving, always struggled to see how this can be safe, burning object, smoke, all very condusive to one's attention span and visibility whilst driving.

Personally for me like most it's the choccy bar and crisps smile

I tried eating a sandwich while driving in town, but that's too hard in a manual car and whilst concentrating on roundabouts and junctions. Well I could do it but it's in no way safe!

Motorways are perfect for eating on, such mononity goes down well with a chicken and bacon sammich smile

No more than an opened packet of unwrapped sweets or mints. Something you can grab one of without looking and pop in your mouth. No drinks.

Good luck with that!
