I have had an urge for a nice hotdog for a while now. After looking around Asda and Tesco I could only find the own brand, Herta and Princes frankfurters which are made from mechanically recovered chicken and other 'sweepings' and hydrolysed fat. I've eaten the Princes ones before and found them disgusting.

I eventually found Ye Olde Oak American Style in Sainsburys which seemed better at 70% pork content, but they are quite high in saturated fat at 10g per 100g. They also have added hydrolysed fats, which I thought was the unhealthiest type of processed fat. I bought them anyway and enjoyed them in a stick with onions, ketchup and mustard. lick

Has anyone found a better option for both taste and health?

What about Aldi? This isn't a recommendation, but a guess - that a German supermarket chain should have decent German Frankfurters!

Lidl do jars of giant frankfurters. Pretty tasty but I admit I didn't look too closly at the label to check out content. It was hangover fodder after all...

The earlobes and testicles will be included in the 'pork' percentage. The other 20% will be binding agents, flavor chemicals and colorings.

if you're looking for any kind of healthy sausage, forget it they are all very unhealthy:

Avoid them completely.

Interesting links and video. I didn't expect them to be good for me, but I was hoping to find the best of the bunch.

Perhaps it's time to experiment with vegetarian hotdogs if I can find such a thing. I suppose they will still be full of salt and preservitives, which seems to be the main issue on the links you posted Silver933tt.

Normal hotdogs don't really taste like meat anyway.

It is quite interesting but the initial mix is bleak.

What's also interesting is the scale, for them to be produced in that scale means they're being consumed in a similar scale...

I probably eat a 5 sausage jar a month - but that's because it's handy weekend camping fodder. This month I've probably had 3 jars as I've done Silverstone twice and Goodwood biggrin

It's not healthy - but they are tasty, and very easy fill you up type food smile so I'm not surprised with how popular they are.

Buy cheap cut, (yellow label brand) make sausage.

Buy rolls. Fry onions. mustard, tommy, Done.

Never mind professional bores like silver whatever, once in a while will do no harm, and will be tasty.

yeh, you're right, everyone should listen to your factual quotes when it comes to a simple way to reduce the risk of something nasty since you're a highly qualified medical expert rolleyes

However, I prefer to listen to people like these who are a tiny, weeny bit more qualified than yourself I believe:

Nope, Not a professional, but there again, not a bore either. Mind you, I never mentioned processed meats, unless you include processing it yourself.
