Just looking online at BMW site and am a bit confused at engine range.

In the 5 series tourer:

Both are showing at 2996cc

525d is 204 hp
530d is 245 hp

Why/how does the hp vary so much when they have the same cc? I would have expected the 525 to be 2.5 litres, and the 530 to be 3 litres.

With thanks.

Nick

I just purchased an 09 plate 525d - it's a 3 litre with approx 200 horses. My mate has an 08 plate 530d and it has the same lump, 1 single turbo, same as mine, but is mapped to give another 30 or 40 horse. The 535d has twin blowers and gives over 280 horses.

I've had the 335d, the 635d and just got the 525d as I got a brilliant deal from BMW. It's noticeably slower, but has plenty of power for my needs. Did 300 miles in one trip at the weekend, steady driving and she returned 51mpg (mostly 70-75 mph on the motorway. A remap on the 525d will bring it up to about 250 bhp - the same/similar to the 530d.

Hope this helps.

Right, so the 530d has a single turbo over the 525d.

Thank you!

The 525d is the same capacity/block & pistons as the 530d & 535d.
The 530d has various upgrades over the 525d including bigger valves and a strengthened gearbox thats able to take substantially more torque than the unit in the 525d.

LCI 525d - 400NM
LCI 530d/535d - 600NM

Certainly something to think about if re-mapping is on the cards. wink

No remapping as it will be OH's company car.

So no turbo's, just engine work?

525D has a single turbo!! as does the 530D - confusing I know, as one has more power than the other and they're the same! both 3 litres etc....!!

Cableguy is right - this is why I'm not mapping my 525D. My 335d and 635d and 123d were all mapped, but all were capable of taking the extra poke - ie, good brakes and gearboxes!

I'm sure your missus will be happy with a 525D - I am and I've had the fastest car in the world!! 335d coupe mapped!! a zillion horse and 300mph + thumbup

Got it thanks. So the 530d just has engine work and a different map over the 525d, both with a single blower.

We'll use it for (ahem) towing a caravan from time to time, so the extra power of the 530d would be nice for sure.

I assume these engine differences would carry over to say the X3 and 3 series tourer?

With regards to the, ahem, cough, CARAVAN!!, the 525d is plenty competent enogh to tow my 28 foot twin axle around, the 530d will obviously be that much easier.

Sounds to me that you're after a decent towing vehicle.....!

Ditch the bimmer idea and get one of these babies: (cheap as chips)

Feck! That's a motor home and a half. Would go nicely along the Cornwall lanes. I stress enough as it is already!

We need a tower, a family car (dogs included) and a nice drive.

Only Beemers worth looking at on her next list.
VW is there, but only Polos, Sharans and Californias. No Toureg frown No Passatt either.

Cheers!

Pointless exercise, easier to change the car.
