Bought my new wife a lovely looking T reg Jaguar XK8 convertible. It has had only one previous owner, a full Jaguar service history, 70,000 miles and is in very nice condition. The chap we bought it from used to be the Sales Director of the local Jaguar dealer. He has retired and now sells cars from his home as a handy little sideline. It was given a major service by the dealer before we collected it. It was sold to us with a six months mechanical warranty. We've only had the car a month and Caroline has done about 500 miles in it.

We went out in it at the weekend and I noticed it blow a large blue cloud on starting when we were leaving to come home. I then noticed it blowing more blue smoke as were driving a couple of times. Oil pressure and temperature read normal.

Got it home and I checked the oil and found it below the minimum level. So I called the chap we bought it from and he was, fairly understandably, a little defensive.

We've just dropped the car back at the dealer for them to diagnose the issue. I'm expecting there to be something like worn rings or a faulty valve stem seal. I'm expecting this is going to take a few quid to remedy.

My instinct is that we should not be footing the bill for any of this. Do other people think this is reasonable?

Did it make you angry enough to punch a cyclist?

If's he's selling cars from home then surely he is a trader and you may be covered?

Of course you shouldn't foot the bill, especially if it's got a warranty.

Assuming the guy is a proper motor trader not just someone who buys the odd car at auction before giving them a polish and flipping them on to joe public, get on to him. He's a bloke who sold you a knackered car, not your best mate.

Did he sell as a trader or private?

If it's private then you have no comeback. If he's a trader six months is probably too long.

Depends on the terms of the warranty I guess, and whether worn rings are classed as reasonable wear and tear.

What was the warranty? A third party one underwritten by an insurer, or something in writing from him standing behind the car??

I need to make it clear at this point that as things stand there is no problem with the chap we have bought the car from. He is well known in the area and has a good reputation. I'm just asking how people would deal with this situation if they were in my position.

How long have you had it, you could always just return it and ask for a refund if it's under 14 days i think, If I'm wrong I'm sure someone will be along in a min to tell me smile

Unlucky.
From a trader according to the OP and with a warranty.
