There just maybe a chance that I will be parting with with my MK1 MX-5, a car that I truly love & have done for the last 4 1/2 years of ownership but it just might be time to move on. I can't live with a 'normal' car, its just not Me so I was thinking about replacing it with either of these as I really like them :

Alfa Romeo GTV (probably around a year 2000 model WITH leather interior)

MG ZT (probably in Trophy blue, either a 1.8 Turbo or a 2.5V6 if I'm brave)

Everyone tells Me that I would look good on the hard shoulder in the Alfa.....ha ha.....either way I would carefully check cambelt change history etc etc on both cars.

So, my Mazda may be 20 years old but is and always has been 100% reliable. If I were to swap to either of the above would I regret it or am I getting a better car either way?

perhaps if the gtv is a lusso with teledials, pref the late facelift with either the 155hp TS or the 3.2 V6

and if the ZT was the V8, or am i thinking of another MG Z?

i imagine the latter could be fun, and i imagine the GTV would sound lush and look lovely, but even the lowly dynamics of an mx5 may make it feel like a heavyweight understeerer

The V8 is the ZT260 and a lot more money than the others (£8kish from memory). Also hugely thirsty - mpg in the teens is said to be quite plausible. I still would though. lick

If you go for the GTV V6 some reckon the earlier 3-litre is a sweeter engine than the 3.2.

I used to car share with a guy who had a 2.0 litre GTV, which was lovely to sit in, sounded great, and didn't seem that unreliable (I've had 2 Fiats now so, maybe not the best person to comment on typical reliability!). It had NO boot though, it really is letterbox slim, and the back seats are probably no good for anyone over 8 yrs old.

The Rover would be more practical, but I doubt you'd get a rear drive V8, so you are looking at 2 heavy front drivers, and if you are used to something as balletic as an MX5 I really think you will struggle. Gave you driven either the Alfa or Rover?

I went from a 1.8 MX5 to a 2.0 GTV and despite the big difference in power to weight the GTV feels much faster*, and there isnt much to separate the 2 on the same b-roads. The GTV has a passive rear steering that tucks the back in as loads up the rear suspension, gives it a degree of over-steer.

  • is a bit lardy from a standing start, but rolling 2nd/3rd gear from 3 - 7Krpm just feels so much faster.

I have owned a Mk1 MX5, a 3 litre GTV and now a 3.5 MX5. Can't comment on the MG.

What do you want from a car? With a GTV bills will never be far away. Be it wishbones, belts or bushes. They also eat tyres due to the aggressive alignment and camber. Fabulous engine though. The GTV turns in surprisingly well but it is ultimately fwd and tended to understeer so care on the throttle is required. It's a very nice car, gorgeous looking and fabulous on motorways and A-roads at 80%. If you proper push on though it's nowhere near as satisfying as a 5.

For a moment there I thought you meant a 3.5 litre MX5!

I (we) just need something bigger, I have driven a GTV & a ZT & liked them both. The GTV wins on driving pleasure and just wins on looks. ZT would be more practical and I guess I wouldn't be too worried about bills being just round the corner, Remember I'm used to a 20 year old MX5 that has been 100% reliable in all the time I have owned it. It just runs & runs & runs & runs....

Anyway, since I posted MrsVitesse has decided she would like a bigger car and she is happy to get rid of the 1.0 powerhouse of a Micra, but she won't be driving my car of choice, she has mentioned Megane Scenics...oh dear...still it solves the practicality (can't go camping due to car size!) problem and then I will probably keep the little Maz....
