I have always replaced the cheap freebie Tax Disk holders on my cars with the appropriatley coloured (currently got brushed aluminium in a silver car) metal £10 ones they do in Halfords (nothing to bling, just plain looking) as I really dislike the way the plastic ones age/turn up at the edges.

My neighbor turned up the other day in his brand new 10 plate BMW 740d, fully specced up so I went out and had a good nose around and made a general comment about getting a decent tax disk holder, his attitude was why spend £10 on a new one. He'd just spent what I would guess at over £60k on a car!

I've noticed a lot of very expensive cars that their owners obviously take great pride over making as attractive as possible, why do so many people not want to spend £10 on a decent tax disk holder? You wouldn't have a bit of tat like that stuck anywhere on the outside of your car, why have it in the windscreen?

I must add as a footnote, Mrs 118 does think I'm OCD when it comes to my cars....

Two bits of black insulating tape works for me. Whole roll, enough for 300 cars in all probability, was 30p.

That standard Audi one does fine in my car.

I dont really like those big metal ones, they always remind me of those cars which are fitted with a halfords crome gear knob, pedals etc.

As echoed on the previous thread metal type holders are a real pain to undo when changing the disc. I also had the unfortunate experience of searching a grass verge and hawthorn hedge to find mine after it flew out the open passenger window while "enthusiastically" taking a corner! Those sticky pads supplied are rubbish mad

I think my audi tax disc holder looks alot better than your brushed aluminium one. Its never going to fall off and in 5 years of loyal service it hasn't discoloured and the edges arent peeling. if it does discolour/start to peel i will get audi to replace it free next time i buy parts.

Why spend more money on making something look cheap and tacky

Personally I think the metal ones look naff, and I'm OCD enough to ask the dealer for a new plastic one every so often when I think mine is looking tatty or faded.

The (free) MINI dealership ones look quite nice IMHO.

hehe I had a cling holder which didn't, so it just sat on the dash of my old car. Until i went round a corner with both windows open and nearly lost a very expensive circle of paper.

I can't bring myself to pay for a tax disc holder. I got some Highways Agency ones from the motorshow a few years back which have been good, and my current car is using a 1960s Ford dealership one, which is holding very well.

My dad did once inexplicably spend £8 on a really stty plastic one from Halfords with a picture of a spider on it.

Personally, I don't like anything stuck on the windscreen. I opted for one of those metal jobbies and stuck it to the top of the dashboard at an angle (the dash is quite angled for starters, which helped).

Not the most re-usable in the event of a windscreen change.

I use Magnetax. They are only a couple of quid, and look neat.

So is buying a nifty PH one in black for MOH's Lotus naff?
It is usually agreed that I do the fiddly replacing of the disc too each year as those screws are a pain smile
