Any car mechanics/enthusiasts advice needed urgently- Audi A
Discussion
Hi, Ive got a 2006 2.0tdi a3.
got 40k on the clock.
went from leeds to stevenage a couple of times. After a while of the car running, and going considerable speeds, it makes a noise, like metal in contact with metal, as the engine ticks over.
It does it on idle, but also when the clutch is down, it does it worse. It only makes this noise after long-ish trips, but the engine temperature is always at 90 (middle on the gauge- so not overheating)
I took a video of it on idle, after a 2.5hr trip, and the sound is on there too.
One neighbour said it sounds like the clutch bearing, in which case its a £500 (quoted £1500 from audi) clutch refit.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
dan.

It does fit the bill of a clutch bearing, although it won't be 600 quid, more like 300-ish or less.
It's one part that is changed when you change the clutch, so it'll be the same price as a regular clutch change.
You could even leave the clutch, and just do the bearing, which would cut the cost even more, but standard practice is swap the clutch if you are ever that deep into the engine as it's the labour that costs the most.

Not deadly dangerous, but it'll get louder, then squeal, then gearchanging will become a real pain in the ass, and you might find the clutch dragging, so it could start creeping like an automatic if your foot isn't on the brake.
Or.. it could just go bang.
It'll take the shine off you day, but even my mum managed to cope with numerous clutch cable snaps, which give similar results.
