Drink = 80p
Choc Bars = 35p
Not given the price for the ice cream!

3 children buy 1 ice cream, 2 choc bars and 3 drinks for £3.50.

Another 3 children buy 3 ice creams, 2 choc bars and 1 drink for £4.50

How much does it cost to buy 1 ice cream, 1 choc bar and 1 drink?

(the answer I am hoping for is 'the question is wrong, as it doesn't work)

Are the Ice Creams different flavours? A Chocolate one might cost more than Raspberry version.

This. The question is broken.
Perhaps one was without the flake?

If they do cost different amounts based on flavour (or whatever) it would be impossible to answer the question seeing as it just states "1 Ice Cream".

Example 1 - Ice cream = £0.40, Chocolate bar = £0.35, Drink = £.80 - Total £1.55

Example 2 - Ice cream = £1.00, Chocolate bar =£.035, Drink = £.80 - Total £2.15

Perhaps they were different ice cream vans?

See post above.

Question was one of a number in a maths booklet given to starters at their new secondary school...

Teaching them that their exams may be wrong, and its always worth having a copy of the answers??

Or to show improvement as "look they all got basic maths wrong when they started, but just 24 hours later they can do it..." biggrin

Prices are the wrong way around.

Try doing the calc again with the choc bars at 80p and the drinks at 35p.

Answer is therefore £2 as and iced cream costs 85p

bowtie

though to be honest, its more down to a healthy scepticism of base data integrity built up over a number of years of being given cack-handed information to work with. smile
