Las Vegas for 9 nights - overkill?
Discussion
I'm flying out to a festival in Nevada and will be flying to Vegas. My mate and I originally planned a roadtrip to San Francisco but he's less able to throw as much cash at the holiday as he was when we originally looked at it, so we are thinking that using Vegas as a base for 9 nights might work out cheaper for him (I'm assuming he doesnt gamble - or always wins), rather than the constant hire car, different drop off point cost, San Fran Hotels and hotels/motels in between.
Is 9 nights in Vegas too much? We are both early 30s are are happy to party/nightclub. I was thinking we could have a few days driving around the grand canyon/death valley/hoover Dam etc - but that still leaves 6 or 7 days with no plans. Is there much else within easy reach?

i've done 7 nights twice,9 nights and the last one was 11 nights.love the place if you hadn't guessed.
there is plenty to do and see and the extra time gives you the chance to slow the pace once or twice to make the most of it.lots of stuff around the strip to do and the option of good road trips - death valley etc.also check out the pools - the pools at the wynn are first class and come with their own scenery
where are you staying?
hope you have a great time.

hard rock will be full on and quite a young crowd.the wynn is the best and there are some deals going but is a bit calmer than bellagio for example.caesar's is ok but not as good as wynn or bellagio.the ones to avoid are stratosphere, excaliber, circus, imperial palace(but go there to see the car collection),bally's.
worth it if the deal is right - mgm, paris, mirage, venitian, luxor is going downhill but cheap, planet hollywood may be worth a look but prob a younger crowd.i don't know much about the off strip places but if i were you i wouldn't bother to stay in them.
there are some great restaurants for example steakhouse at the wynn which you really should try.some have early offers.also some great cheap diners off the strip.there is one we always go to on the way to the gun store - on tropicana i think- which locals use and is cheap but good.it doesn't have to be expensive all the time if you are on a budget.
there is a great burger place at the mirage near the caesar's side entrance.it does the best milkshake in the world (imho) inc as a takeaway called the lunchbox.give it a try if you go.
i'm really jealous now.

bst places to stay are the bellagio, caesers palace, the mirage and planet hollywood (who have some fantastic film themed suites if you want to splash out, my friend had the die hard suiteand my god ive never seen anything like it) these hotels and casinos are all very central on the strip surrounded by everything.
i did 6 nights, it was great but i think i was fine to come home after that without feeling shortchanged, and i didnt even go anywhere outside vegas.

9 days isn't overkill.
If you have enough of the strip then hire a car and head to red rock, Valley of Fire, Death Valley, Grand canyon, Zion, Bryce. There are plenty of off strip places to occupy your time.
I go to Vegas every year and love the place. This year i'll be there for 11 nights.
Look at MGM as a good middle of the road hotel. Wynn and Bellagio are obviously nicer but MGM is a good cheaper alternative.
If you do decide to go to San Fran then there is no drop off fee's between states on the west coast.

Thanks for all of the tips. Its looking like Vegas for 5 nights, Festival thing for 3 nights, Lake Tahoe for 2 nights, Yosemite for 2 nights, then back to Vegas for 3 nights or so.
Obviously its a bit of a road trip but not the original one we planned, and looking around the internet, Tahoe and Yosemite can be done one a more budget level (for accomodation at least).

We usually stay at Bellagio in Vegas and Embassy Suites in South Lake Tahoe.Obviously its a bit of a road trip but not the original one we planned, and looking around the internet, Tahoe and Yosemite can be done one a more budget level (for accomodation at least).
Yosemite park rooms get booked well in advance. We ended up staying in a small motel in Lee Vining which is at the entrance when we went.

Are you going to Burning Man?
Yep

I've been to Vegas a few times, and as suggested if you're prepared to travel there are plenty of things to do. I normally use it as a starting and stopping point, and have been to a bunch of fantastic places like the Hoover Dam, Grand Canyon, Death Valley, Page (for Antelope Canyon), Monument Valley, Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, Zion, and Valley of Fire. Most of those are much more than day trips, and string together nicely for a decent road trip. If you want to stay based in LV though, I'm sure there is plenty to keep most people occupied - I'm sure I could manage it, and I don't drink or gamble!
