Best route

I'm traveling down to Christchurch (Dorset, not NZ ) from Nottingham tomorrow about 6 pm-ish.

Would anyone know if there's any roadworks either on the M40/A34 or the M1/M3.
Which of the above routes would be the best for usual traffic conditions? (M40 is about 10 mins quicker according to Google maps)

M40 all the way, M1 is really crap around Luton with about 17 miles of 50 mph road works and then you would have to go on the M25
